ATLANTA, Ga. - The fifth-ranked Bruins finish up their fall schedule next week (Oct. 31-Nov. 2), taking part in the second annual East Lake Cup presented by Hewlett Packard Enterprise. The final four teams from last season's NCAA match play championships, UCLA, #4 Stanford, #25 Duke and Washington, will square off at the East Lake Golf Club. Golf Channel will air live coverage of the event each day from 12-3 p.m. PT.
The starting fivesome for the Bruins will be senior Bronte Law, sophomores Lilia Vu and Bethany Wu and freshmen Mariel Galdiano and Clare Legaspi.
The East Lake Cup begins on Monday when all four teams, along with four squads on the men's side, will compete in individual stroke play to determine the medalist and the seeds for the two days of match play. Stroke play will begin at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT and live scoring will be available here. Semifinals of match play will take place on Tuesday, followed by the championship and consolation matches on Wednesday. Match play starts on Tuesday and Wednesday at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT. Live scoring for match play will be available here.
The Bruins will be playing in their fourth fall event, having posted a win at the Stanford Intercollegiate (+4, 572, rain-shortened to 36 holes, Oct. 14-15), a third-place showing at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate (-20, 844, Sept. 25-27) and a seventh-place finish at the Nanea Pac-12 Preview (+31, 907, Oct. 24-25).
Law, who missed the Nanea Pac-12 Preview after qualifying through the second stage of LPGA Q-School last weekend, is coming off a victory at Stanford, the third time in a row that she won the event and her seventh career victory to set a new school record (Kay Cockerill, 6). After an opening-round 70, Law blistered the Stanford Golf Club with a bogey-free, 6-under 65 in round two (-7, 135 overall). She also tied for 21st at the ANNIKA (-3, 213), shooting a second-round, 4-under 68.
Wu has a trio of top 20 finishes to start her sophomore campaign, tying for eighth at Stanford (+2, 144), going T-14 at the ANNIKA (-5, 211) and tying for 17th at Nanea (+5, 224). She has four under-par rounds, including all three of her first rounds (combined -4), as well as two under 70, including a career-best 67 in the second round of the ANNIKA.
Vu was second at the ANNIKA with a career-best score of 10-under (206), shooting 66 (-6) and 67 (-5) to open the tournament. She followed that up with a T-5 at Stanford (+1, 143). Vu battled back from a rough 36 holes on the first day at Nanea to shoot a 4-under 69 on day two to tie for 32nd (+11, 230)
Galdiano returned to her home state last weekend to finish second at Nanea. After an opening-round 75, she battled back with a 1-under 72 and a 5-under 68 to place solo second (-4, 215). Galdiano tied for 27th (E, 216) at the ANNIKA and tied for 34th at Stanford (+8, 150).
Legaspi will also be making her fourth start for the Bruins in as many events, going T-43 at ANNIKA (+5, 221), T-53 at Stanford (+11, 153) and 58th at Nanea (+25, 244). Her best round of the year was a 2-under 70 in the second round at the ANNIKA.
In last season's NCAA match play championships in Eugene, Ore., the Bruins, after winning the stroke play portion of the tournament, defeated Oregon in the quarterfinals (4-0-1) before losing to eventual national champion Washington (3-1-1). In two other match play events last season, UCLA finished second at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic and third at the SDSU March Mayhem at The Farms. Vu was undefeated as a freshman in match play, posting a 7-0-2 record. Law was 5-1, while Wu was 6-3.
