Los Angeles, Calif. - Kevin Silva tallied five saves, while Brian Iloski and Abu Danladi combined for nine shots, including three on goal, as UCLA played to a scoreless draw against No. 16 San Diego State on Thursday from Drake Stadium. It was the team's regular-season finale and they celebrated Senior Night prior to the match.
"We played a good game but unfortunately we couldn't find the goal we needed to win," said UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo. "We created numerous chances but were unlucky not to score on some of the good combinations and good individual plays."
UCLA held a 15-12 advantage in shots overall, but were tied with the Aztecs at 5-5 in shots on goal.
The Bruins had a flurry of opportunities in the middle of the second half. Danladi made a run by the defense in the 54th minute but his shot was saved and then later in the 61st minute he flicked the ball up to himself and struck a strong shot just over the bar. In the 59th minute Reggie Cannon made an individual run down the right-side of the field and flicked the ball past the keeper but his shot went just wide of the post. Jackson Yueill almost had the match's lone goal in the final minute as he took a through ball just inside the penalty box but his game-winner was denied by the goalkeeper.
After the first half the two teams were tied at 6-6 in shots. Jose Hernandez made a strong run at goal in the 29th minute as he received a pass to the front of the goal but his shot went just wide to the right. Minutes earlier, Abdullah Adam made an impressive individual run through the field and into the penalty area but his shot was also wide of the goal.
Silva earned his third shutout of 2016 and the second against the Aztecs this season.
The Bruins finish the regular season with a 9-7-2 overall record and a 4-5-1 mark in Pac-12 play.
"We ended the game with a 0-0 result and we look forward to seeing what happens with the selection committee," added Salcedo. "We have a strong RPI and strength of schedule so hopefully our body of work is good enough."
