Bruins Dominate Day One of A3 Invite

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. -- The UCLA women's swim team is in first place through day one at the A3 Performance Invitational. With 427.5 total points so far, the Bruins have a comfortable lead over second-place Hawai'i with 296 points.
200 Free Relay
Kicking off the evening session with a win, the Bruin quartet of Kenisha Liu, Linnea Mack, Isabella Goldsmith, and Sarah Kaunitz recorded the top time in the 200 Free Relay (1:31.24).
500 Freestyle
In the first of three individual events, two Bruins finished in the top five in the championship final of the 500 Free. Freshman Lisa Kaunitz placed third with a 4:53.35, followed by senior Hayden Walker in fourth at 4:53.68. Michaela Merlihan recorded the top time in the consolation final of the 500 Free. The senior clocked in at 4:48.76 -- the third fastest time of the event finals. Also competing in the B final, freshman Cali Raukar finished seventh (15th overall) with a time of 5:01.31. Rounding out the Bruins in the scoring finals, junior Margaux Verger Gourson placed first in the bonus final (17th overall).
200 Individual Medley
Three Bruins competed in the championship final of the 200 IM on Thursday evening. Liu led the pack, placing third with a 2:00.70. Goldsmith finished fourth (2:02.57), while senior Nina Hayes recorded the eighth-best time (2:04.90). Sophomore Emma Schanz swam the fastest time in the consolation final. Her 2:01.60 was the fourth fastest time of the evening swim. Lisa Kaunitz placed 12th overall (2:05.23), while freshman Amy Okada and junior Carly Reid finished 18th and 24th, respectively.
50 Freestyle
In the final individual event of the evening, Goldsmith and Sarah Kaunitz swam for the Bruins in the championship final of the splash and dash. Goldsmith tied for second with SDSU's Alma Thormalm (23.20), while Sarah Kaunitz checked in at sixth (23.42). Senior Linnea Mack won the consolation final with a time of 22.47 -- the fastest time of the evening session. Senior Savannah Steffen checked in at third (11th overall) with a 23.42.
400 Medley Relay
Closing out Thursday's evening session with a win, Mack, Schanz, Okada, and Liu posted the top time in the 400 Medley Relay (3:40.17).
The A3 Performance Invitational continues tomorrow with the 200 Medley Relay, 400 IM, 100 Butterfly, 200 Free, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke, and 800 Free Relay. Preliminaries begin at 9 a.m., while finals kick off at 5 p.m. Live results will be available through the Meet Mobile app, available on iTunes, while daily results will be posted here.
