UCLA Falls in Overtime in NCAA Second Round
November 20, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Louisville, Ky. - Abu Danladi scored in the 59th minute, while Kevin Silva recorded eight saves as the UCLA men's soccer team fell to No. 4 seed Louisville, 2-1, in overtime in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
"The entire season prepares you for the postseason," said UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo. "The tournament gives you an opportunity to show what kind of team you have become. Based on our two tournament performances, we can be really proud of this group. Our play tonight in the second half was outstanding. We absolutely did enough to win, but the game winner did not fall for us. Our mentality and preparation was to win the game, but we came up short. Congrats to Louisville."
The Cardinals scored the game-winning goal in the 94th minute as Tate Schmitt headed in a cross from Danny Reynolds to the right post. Louisville advances to play Notre Dame in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
Danladi scored the match's equalizing goal in the 59th minute as he deflected a clearance by Louisville goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland into the back of the net. Danladi's goal was his team-best seventh of the season. The Bruins turned up the offensive pressure in the second half as they totaled seven shots, including four on goal, compared to just four shots in the opening period.
UCLA trailed Louisville, 1-0, after the first half. Jack Gayton scored his third goal of the year as he collected a free kick and finished inside the far-right post in the third minute.
UCLA finishes the season with a 10-8-2 record.
