Bruins Advance at #NationalIndoors

FLUSHING, NY โ The 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiateย Championships is underway, and Ena Shibahara and Gage Brymer have advanced to their respective rounds of 16.ย In hard-fought first-round matches, both Bruins won in three sets.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย
Second-seeded Shibahara dictated the pace early, taking the first set over Camille Gbaguidi, 6-2.ย The Bruin served up two aces, broke Gbaguidi twice, and won 12 of 15 first-serve points.ย The second set was more evenly matched, however, as the opponents traded game for game.ย Gbaguidi outlasted Shibahara in the tiebreaker to send the match to a third set.ย
Shibahara regained momentum and took control from the get-go.ย Coasting to a 6-1 win, the Bruin served up three aces and was three for three in break points.
On the men's side, Brymer took the first set over Perez, 6-4.ย The two battled in the second, trading holds and only winning one break point apiece.ย Knotted at 6-6, the set went into the tiebreaker, where Perez edged Brymer 7-5.ย Brymer jumped out to an early lead in the third set and never looked back.ย Up 3-2 over Perez, the Bruin won the last 10 points of the match to oust the No. 5 seed from the bracket.ย
In the round of 16 on Friday, Shibahara will face Baylor's Blair Shankle while Brymer squares off with Jose Salazar of Arkansas.ย
In doubles play, Shibahara and Jada Hart registered a straight-set win over Star Makarome and Alexandra Solovyev of Columbia on Thursday afternoon.ย With the 6-0, 6-4 win, the Bruin duo will face the winner of the Manasse/Starr and Daniell/Routliffe matchup on Friday. ย ย ย
