WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i - A strong finish to their opening round propelled the Bruins to a third-place standing following 18 holes at the Amer Ari Invitational at the Waikoloa Kings' Course on Thursday.
As a team, UCLA shot a 9-under 279 (season best), which is one shot shy of Pac-12 rivals Stanford and USC (-10). The Bruins are three clear of Oregon and Oklahoma State, which are tied for fourth at -6. UCLA leads the field after round one on the par 3's at 5-under and is tied for the lead with a 9-under total on the par 5's.
Five of the six Bruins finished the first round under par, led by senior Jonathan Garrick and freshman Patrick Murphy, who each shot -3 (69). The shotgun start saw Garrick open on the seventh hole, and after he was 2-over following his initial 12 holes, he went 5-under on his final six holes, with an eagle on the second and birdies on #1, #4 and #5. The team leader in scoring average shot his ninth under-par round of the season and sixth in the 60's.
Murphy, playing as a non-team scoring individual, began on the 17th and birdied holes #18, #1, #5 and #14, with a bogey on the eighth his lone blemish on the scorecard. Both players are tied for eighth after 18 holes, three back of the individual lead.
A trio of Bruins shot 2-under 70 and are tied for 15th, four shots back. Senior Lorens Chan, in his first tournament of the season after sitting out the fall with a wrist injury, opened on the seventh and was 2-over through 11 holes before making birdies on the 18th, second, fifth and sixth. Sophomore Corey Shaun, starting on the ninth, had birdies on holes #18, #2, #5 and #7, with a pair of bogeys on the sixth and 17th, to post his best round of the season.
Also checking in at 2-under was freshman Cole Madey, who made 13 straight pars to start his round, which was followed by a birdie on the third, three more pars and a birdie on his final hole, the 7th. Freshman Phil Delisi, starting on the ninth, shot a non-team scoring even-par round of 72. He is tied for second in the field with six birdies, but evened that out with bogeys on the first, sixth and 10th and a triple on the 12th.
It will be another shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. HT/9:30 a.m. PT on Friday, starting on holes 7-9 (Murphy starts on 17). Live scoring will be available here.
