RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - The third-ranked Bruins defeated Pac-12 foe and #9 Stanford on Wednesday in the third-place match at the SDSU March Mayhem at The Farms, beating the Cardinal, 4-1.
Freshman Bethany Wu was done just after the turn, winning nine of the first 10 holes to quickly dispatch of Quirine Eijkenboom, 9 and 8. The only halved hole was on the fifth, as Wu birdied the first, saw Eijkenboom bogey holes #2, #3, #4, #6 and #7, and then the Bruin freshman birdied the eighth, ninth and 10th to close out the match.
Senior Louise Ridderström was the next Bruin to clinch a point, defeating Shannon Aubert, 5 and 4. She never trailed in the match, winning the first and third holes. Aubert claimed the fourth and sixth, but Ridderström countered that with victories on holes #5 and #7 to remain 2-up. The Bruin senior won the first hole on the back nine, followed by birdies at the 12th and 13th, eventually clinching the match on the 14th with a halve.
Freshman Lilia Vu clinched the overall match for the Bruins with a win over Lauren Kim. The match was all-square at the turn, as Vu won the first and fifth holes, while Kim took the third and seventh. Vu then won four of the next six holes, #11, #12, #14 and #16, to win the match, 4 and 2.
Junior Bronte Law knocked off Mariah Stackhouse, 2-up. After three halves, Stackhouse won the fourth, but Law came back with a victory on the seventh. Law took the lead for good with a birdie on the ninth, also winning holes #12 and #13 to go 3-up. She dropped the 14th, but halved the 15th, as the match ended after Vu clinched the overall contest.
Junior Hadas Libman fell by a score of 4 and 2 to Casey Danielson. After dropping the first hole, Libman won the second, but then lost holes #4, #5, #9 and #10. Libman came back with wins at the 12th and 14th, but lost #13 and #16 to drop the match.
