SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Senior Jonathan Garrick fired a 2-under 68 on Monday during the first round of The Western Intercollegiate, as the Bruins are in seventh place after 18 holes. UCLA shot a 5-over 355 as a team.
Garrick made five birdies in his opening round to put him in a tie for seventh after 18 holes, gaining strokes on the second and ninth, and then three in a row on holes #12-#14. His lone blemishes were three bogeys on the third, 11th and 16th. Senior Lorens Chan and freshman Phil Delisi are each tied for 29th after a 1-over 71 on Monday. Chan made three birdies on the fourth, sixth and ninth to go with four bogeys. Delisi had four birdies on the ninth, 12th, 16th and 17th, adding three bogeys and a double.
Freshman Cole Madey is tied for 38th following a 2-over 72. He had three birdies on #9, #13 and #17 with five bogeys. Sophomore Tyler Collier is tied for 50th, posting a 3-over 73 in his first 18 holes. He made birdies on #4, #8, #9 and #12 to go with three bogeys and two doubles. Freshman Patrick Murphy shot a non-team scoring 79 (+9, T-83). He gained strokes on the eighth and 16th, while making two bogeys, three doubles and a triple.
The Bruins will have the same pairings for Tuesday's 8:45 a.m. shotgun start, with the duos of Collier and Murphy and Garrick and Madey opening on the first and Chan and Delisi starting on the second. Live scoring will be available here.
