September 23, 2016 | Men's Soccer
A goal at the nine-minute mark stood for Cal Poly, who upset sixth-ranked UCLA, 1-0, in front of over 7,000 fans in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Although UCLA outshot Cal Poly 4-1 in the first half, the Mustangs (2-4-1) made their shot count. After receiving a pass from Nick Carroll, Mustang's leading scorer Justin Dhillon shot with his left from the top of the box and scored past UCLA goalkeeper Juan Cervantes at 9:00.
The Bruins (4-2-1) outshot Cal Poly, 10-5, but were able to only get just two shots on goal. Abu Danladi had both of those shots on goal and six shots overall in 90 minutes of play. UCLA had a few other good looks but could not capitalize. Erik Holt's shot in the box after a corner kick went wide in the 61st minute, and Brian Iloski's free kick hit the outside right post in the 76th minute.
Cervantes had two saves in the loss. Cal Poly goalkeeper Eric Kam also had two saves.
"Tonight we lost a game where we were better in all facets but the one that matters most," said UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo. "Congrats to Cal Poly and their students. They gave them energy and great support."
The Bruins will begin Pac-12 Conference play on Thursday against Washington. The match will take place at Drake Stadium at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased at uclabruins.com/tickets or at the gate. UCLA students are free.
