UCLA Men's Tennis Blanks GCU in Season Opener

LOS ANGELES - The seventh-ranked UCLA men's tennis team opened up its 2017 dual match season on Wednesday afternoon at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, downing visiting Grand Canyon University, 7-0. The Bruins (1-0) swept doubles play and then took four of six singles matches in straight sets.

The Bruin pair of Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu made quick work of GCU's Philip Kuehnen and Adrian Legarreta on Court No. 1, 6-2. Playing next door at court No. 2, Joseph Di Giulio and Austin Rapp of UCLA handled the Lopes' Francois Musitelli and Mathieu Rajaonah, 6-4 to clinch the doubles point. With the point already clinched, Gage Brymer and Maxime Cressy received a stiff test from Lorenzo Fucile and Valentin Lang before putting them away, 7-5.

In singles play, Rapp carried the momentum over from doubles, defeating Kuehnen quickly on Court No. 6, 6-2, 6-1. With UCLA up 2-0, Redlicki defeated GCU's Musitelli, 6-4, 6-3 at court No. 2. Brymer would clinch the dual match for the Bruins, rebounding from his tight doubles finish with a 6-2, 6-2 decision versus Mathieu Rajaonah at court No. 1.

Zhu and Logan, Staggs, in his first action of the day, each went to a tiebreaker in winning their matches, 3-6, 7-6(2), 10-3 and 6-3, 6-7(2), 10-8, respectively. Cressy faced a tough test against Justin Cvitanovic at court No. 5, winning 7-5, 7-5, to wrap up the sweep for the Bruins.

Next up for the Bruins is another home date at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, when they face UC Santa Barbara Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
