No. 6 Bruins Advance with 4-0 Sweep of UNM

LOS ANGELES -- No. 6 UCLA Bruins men's tennis team defeated the New Mexico Lobos, 4-0, in the first day of ITA Kick-Off Weekend play on Saturday at Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts. The Bruins advance to face Lamar University in a Sunday showdown at 2:00 p.m.
The UCLA (3-0) doubles duo of Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu controlled its match versus the Lobos' pairing of Rudolfo Jauregui and Rick Hernandez-Tong, 6-1, to put the Bruins at an early advantage. That set the stage for the team of Gage Brymer and Logan Staggs, which also made quick work of their competition of Sean Baklini and Jorge Escutia, 6-1, to take the doubles point and early overall lead over New Mexico (0-4).
In singles, Redlicki cruised to a straight-set win over New Mexico's Hernandez-Tong, 6-4, 6-0, to end his day and give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. Similarly, on Court 6, Austin Rapp only needed two sets to handle Baklini, 6-2, 6-2. The decision ultimately came as a result of Logan Staggs' three set victory over Escutia on Court 5. After dropping the first set, the junior fought through to a clinching 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win.
With the win, the Bruins move on to face Lamar University, which defeated Boise State, 4-2, in an earlier match Saturday. Sunday's match, scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts, will decide which team advances to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in February.
