
No. 21 Bruins Top Toreros, Sit Fourth at SMU

LOS ANGELES – No. 21 UCLA had a busy first day of its 2017-18 season Friday, as the Bruins topped home San Diego, 160-96, while eight swimmers and one diver competed during the first day of action at the SMU Classic. Four freshman registered individual victories at the Sports Center Pool in San Diego, while seniors Katie Grover and Ciara Monahan notched Top-3 finishes in Texas.
The 200 Medley Relay quartet of Madison Varisco, Emily Honng, Maddy Bunham and Carly Reid got things started with a victory in the first event of the day at San Diego. The team's 1:48.19 time earned the Bruins a quick 11 points, while Lucy Agnew, Maggie Hummel, Marie-Pierre Delisle and Cali Raukar teamed up to finish a close second (1:49.14).
The opening relay was just the start of an impressive day, as Allison Goldblatt picked up the first win of her career in the second event of the day, clocking in at 10:26.41 in the 1000 Free. Honng would later record her first win, topping the 100 Breast field at 1:07.01. Fellow freshman Hummel was close behind (1:07.80). Hummel would later win the 200 Breast with a time of 2:25.22, while Agnew's impressive 2:04.23 won the 200 Back by over six seconds.
While youth was served, veterans also shined in San Diego. Sophomore Cali Raukar won two races on the afternoon, topping the 100 Back field (58.26) and winning the 500 Free at 5:07.94. Sophomore Lisa Kaunitz tallied a win in the 400 IM (4:32.11), while seniors Carly Reid and Marie-Pierre Delisle rounded out the list of individual Bruin winners with victories in the 200 Free (1:53.54) and 100 Fly (57.11), respectively.
The Bruins ended their day as they started it, with a relay win. The team of Raukar, Reid, freshman Olivia Andrew and Agnew won the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:33.20.
In Texas, the 400 Medley Relay team of Jennifer Lathrop, Sarah Kaunitz, Grover and Kenisha Liu tallied 16 points toward the team total with a time of 3:42.36 to finish fourth.
In her first event of the day, junior Emma Schanz finished fifth in the 400 IM A Final (4:16.87), while sophomore Liu's 1:48.17 was good for fourth in the 200 Free. Senior Sarah Kaunitz, meanwhile, finished fifth in a tight 50 Free at 23.56. She returned later to record a fourth-place time of 1:03.78 in the 100 Breast. Grover touched the wall with the Bruins' best swimming finish of the day, a 52.90 in the 100 Fly that was good for third.
In the lone diving event of the day, senior Ciara Monahan's score of 258.55 contributed 12 points to the Bruin cause with a third-place showing in the 1-meter competition.
Freshman Lathrop, the lone first-year Bruin in the field, showed she belonged with a time of 55.24 in the 100 Back to finish fifth.
To wrap up the day's action, the team of Liu, Grover, Isabella Goldsmith and Sandra Soe completed the 800 Free Relay in a time of 7:18.90 to post 16 points to the Bruin total.
Competition will conclude Saturday with the following events: 200 Medley Relay, 500 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Back, 3-meter Diving, 100 Free, 200 Fly, 200 IM and 200 Free Relay.
