Bruins Surge Into Second Place After 36 Holes

ERIN, Wis. - With the lowest team round of the tournament by six shots, the Bruins moved up six spots to second place after 36 holes at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills at the Erin Hills Golf Course. UCLA's four counting scores combined on a 7-under 281 on Monday to put it one shot back of Texas A&M heading into Tuesday's final round. The Bruins are 5-over (581) through two rounds.
A trio of Bruins, sophomore Hidetoshi Yoshihara and freshmen Devon Bling and Eddy Lai, were under par on Monday, with Lai and Yoshihara sitting inside the Top 5 after two rounds. Lai is in solo fourth at 2-under (142) following a 3-under 69 in his second round. Starting on the 10th hole, he made birdies on #13 and #14, as well as #1, #6 and #7, to go with a pair of bogeys. Lai is three shots back of tournament leader Austin Kendziorski of Marquette.
Yoshihara is two shots back of Lai after firing a 5-under 67, a 10-shot improvement from Sunday's first round. He is tied for fifth at even-par 144. He birdied #12 and #13, as well as #1, before making his lone bogey on #6. Yoshihara finished with a flourish, making birdies on his final three holes (#7-#9) to get back to even par.
Bling is tied for 20th (+5, 149) after posting a 3-under 69, bettering his first-round total by 11 strokes. He birdied #10, #14, #17, #4 and #7, while making a pair of bogeys. Junior Patrick Murphy, playing as an individual, is also at 5-over (149), shooting a 4-over 76 on Monday. He made birdies on #5 and #14, two bogeys and two doubles. Senior Tyler Collier is tied for 27th (+6, 150). He shot a 4-over 76 with birdies on #14, #2, #4 and #5, as well as eight bogeys. Junior Cole Madey had a non-team scoring 77 (+5) on Monday and is tied for 49th (+9, 153). He made a birdie on #9, four bogeys and a double.
The Bruins will be in the final group of pairings with Texas A&M and host Marquette, beginning their last 18 at 10:10 a.m. CT/8:10 a.m. PT on the first tee in the order of Madey, Collier, Bling, Yoshihara and Lai. Murphy will tee off #10 at 10:40 a.m. CT/8:40 a.m. PT. Live scoring will be available here.
