PRINCEVILLE, Hawai'i - Freshman Devon Bling is tied for the lead after one round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational at the Makai Golf Club, shooting a 7-under 65 on Sunday to share top honors with three others through 18 holes.
As a team, the 20th-ranked Bruins are in fourth place on a great scoring day in Hawai'i. UCLA shot a 9-under 279 and is 13 shots back of first-place Louisville (-22).
With the shotgun start for Bling on the 12th hole, he immediately opened with a birdie before five straight pars. Bling then was 3-under on his next two holes, making eagle on the par-5 18th and birdie on the par-4 1st to go to 4-under. Following a birdie on #5 and his lone bogey on #6, the freshman finished strong with birdies on three of his last four holes (#8, #10 and #11) to post a 65.
Junior Cole Madey is tied for 23rd after a 2-under 70. Starting on the 10th, he made eight pars and one bogey on his first nine before producing four birdies on his second nine. Madey gained strokes on #2, #5, #7 and #8, with just one more bogey.
Freshman Eddy Lai is tied for 34th at 1-under (71). He made three birdies on #15, #5 and #8 and two bogeys. Senior Tyler Collier and sophomore Hidetoshi Yoshihara are tied for 54th following 1-over 73s. Collier posted a pair of birdies on #14 and #8 to go with three bogeys, while Yoshihara had a birdie on #8 and two bogeys.
Round two will be another shotgun start on Monday beginning at 8 a.m. HT/11 a.m. PT in the order of Madey, Bling, Yoshihara, Lai and Collier on holes #1-#3. Live scoring will be available here.
