PRINCEVILLE, Hawai'i - The 20th-ranked Bruins finish the fall portion of their 2017-2018 season this week at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational. The three-day tournament runs from Sunday through Tuesday at the par-72, 7,223-yard layout.
The scoring fivesome for the Bruins will be senior Tyler Collier, junior Cole Madey, sophomore Hidetoshi Yoshihara and freshmen Devon Bling and Eddy Lai. Action all three days will be a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m. HT/11 a.m. PT. UCLA will open on holes #10-#12 on Sunday. Live scoring will be available here.
Joining the Bruins and host Hawai'i in the 19-team field are #5 Wake Forest, #32 Georgia Southern, #36 Missouri, #40 Louisville, #43 Ole Miss, #47 Colorado, #50 San Diego State, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, East Tennessee State, Idaho, Louisiana, Sam Houston State, San Diego, UMKC, Utah Valley and Washington (Golfstat rankings as of Oct. 24).
The Bruins have finished second, tied for third and T-4 in their three tournaments so far this season, placing second at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills (+13, 877), tied for third at the rain-shortened Inverness Intercollegiate (-3, 565) and tied for fourth at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate (-18, 846).
Bling is coming off a tie for his best collegiate round, ending the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate with a 3-under 69. He tied for 54th (+3, 219) in Georgia, while tying for 47th at Marquette (+14, 230), where he shot another 3-under 69 in the second round at Erin Hills. Bling began his career with a T-49 showing at Inverness (+5, 147).
Collier has a pair of under-par rounds, shooting a 1-under 70 in round two at Inverness, where he tied for 43rd (+4, 146), and a 1-under 71 at Marquette, where he tied for 16th (+5, 221). Collier tied for 59th (+4, 220) in Georgia.
Lai is second on the team with a scoring average of 71.8, totaling a cumulative 5-under in his opening rounds and a 2-under in his second rounds so far this season. He has finished inside the Top 20 in each of his three events, tying for 12th in Georgia (-5, 211) thanks to an opening-round 69 (-3) and a second-round 70 (-2). Lai tied for 16th at Marquette (+5, 221), posting a second-round 69 (-3), while tying for 20th at Inverness (E, 142), recording a 3-under 68 in his first ever round.
Madey has three under-par rounds and a pair of Top 15 finishes, with a scoring average of 72.4. He tied for ninth at Inverness (-3, 139), shooting a 3-under 68 in the second round. Madey tied for 12th in his last event in Georgia (-5, 211) thanks to closing rounds of 69 (-3) and 67 (-5). He also tied for 42nd at Marquette (+14, 229).
Yoshihara leads the team in scoring average at 70.5, having shot under par in all three tournaments and five of his eight rounds. He tied for third at Marquette (-2, 214), recording a 5-under 67 in round two and a 2-under 70 in the final round. Yoshihara tied for sixth at Inverness (-4, 138), opening his year with a 4-under 67. In the Bruins' last tournament, he tied for 23rd in Georgia (-4, 212), notching a 4-under 68 in round one and a 3-under 69 in round two. Yoshihara is a combined 10-under on the season, including 3-under in round one and 8-under in round two.
