PRINCEVILLE, Hawai'i - The 20th-ranked Bruins posted the second-lowest, 54-hole tournament score in school history at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, shooting an 8-under 280 on Tuesday at the Makai Golf Club to finish in fourth place.
UCLA's three-day total was a 37-under 827, supplanting the -34 (830) mark at the 2003 Pacific Invitational, which was previously the second-lowest tournament score in school history. The Bruins just missed out on the 54-hole team record, which was a -42 (822) at the 2007 NCAA West Regional.
Junior Cole Madey, who tied the lowest single round to par in school history on Monday, shot a 3-under 69 for his final round to finish in solo seventh (-14, 202). He tallied an eagle on the par-5 11th and four birdies on #4, #5, #8 and #14, adding three bogeys.
Freshman Devon Bling rebounded with a 4-under 68 on Tuesday, seven shots better than his second round, to tie for 16th (-8, 208). He started his round on the second hole and made 10 straight pars before making four birdies in a row on holes #12-#15. Bling ended his final trip around Makai with four more pars.
Senior Tyler Collier closed with a 3-under 69 to tie for 23rd (-6, 210). He made four birdies on #5 and #10, and then his final two holes, #18 and #1, adding one bogey. Freshman Eddy Lai tied for 32nd (-4, 212), posting a 2-over 74 in his final round. He notched birdies on #5 and #18, as well as two bogeys and one double. Sophomore Hidetoshi Yoshihara tied for 63rd (+1, 217), recording a 2-over 74 on one birdie (#11), one bogey and one double.
The Bruins finish their fall schedule with Top 4 showings in all four tournaments and will continue their season in the spring at the USD Intercollegiate (Feb. 12-13) in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
