November 12, 2017 | Swimming & Diving
LOS ANGELES โ UCLA capped an impressive trip across town with a career performance by a junior diver on Day 3 of the Trojan Diving Invitational. Traci Shiver qualified for her first Zones trip, posting a preliminary-round score of 247.15 on Platform, before completing the event at 473.50. Ciara Monahan won both the 3-Meter and 1-Meter events on previous days for the Bruins.
Madeline Russell also posted a Top-10 finish for the Bruins, totaling a score of 382.25 on Platform.
Shiver started strong in the prelims, converting on her 6241B for a score of 47.25. Two dives later, she posted her dive of the competition, as her Forward 3 ยฝ Somersault Tuck (107C) was rewarded with a 56.70. She would add another dive of 50-plus on the next go-around, totaling 52.20 on her 5152B. Her round of 247.15 was good for third, narrowly behind Serena Sedillo of Fresno State (251.25) and Carly Souza of USC (247.75).
Along with Kelli Ann Funk of Fresno State, those four divers battled for the top spot down the stretch. Ultimately, Sedillo would prove too much, totaling three scores of 50 or more in the final round. Shiver rebounded from a slow start to the round, though, recording a 50.75 on her Forward 2 ยฝ Somersault 1 Twist Pike (5152B) for the best-scored dive of the turn. She would finish at 473.50, just ahead of Funk at 473.25.
Shiver's strong showing is the latest for the junior, who posted a final-round score of 250.95 on the Platform at the 2017 USA Diving Zone F Championships in the summer.
The Bruin divers will take a break from competition until Dec. 1, when they head to the Georgia Fall Invitational in Athens, Ga. The three-day event will take place at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia.
