Top 5s, School Record Highlight Day 2 in Texas

November 30, 2017 | Swimming & Diving

AUSTIN, Texas โ€“ Three members of the No. 25 UCLA swimming and diving team qualified for A Finals Thursday on Day 2 of the Texas Invitational at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

Sandra Soe was the top Bruin finisher of the day, charting a fourth-place time of 4:41.88 in the 500 Free final. Emma Schanz also posted a Top-5 finish, coming in fifth in the 200 IM (1:56.51) and setting a new school record. Katie Grover tied for sixth in the 50 Free with a time of 22.68.

The preliminary round of the 500 Free saw Soe, Margaux Verger Gourson, Lisa Kaunitz and Allison Goldblatt all swim fast enough to return later in the day. In addition to Soe's nearly two-second improvement on her preliminary time fourth-place finish in the A Final, Verger Gourson also impressed. The senior took the top spot in the C Final, clocking in with a time of 4:45.33โ€”almost six seconds faster than her preliminary-round time.

After Schanz squeaked into the 200 IM A Final, the junior took full advantage of the opportunity. Following a preliminary-round time of 1:58.65, Schanz came in at 1:56.51 in the final to take fifth. Her mark broke Lauren Hall's previous school record of 1:56.67, set in 2011.

Another C Final ended up belonging to a Bruin, as well, with Kenisha Liu posting a final-round time of 2:00.15 in the 200 IM to hold off three hard-charging competitors. Also in the C Final was Isabella Goldsmith, whose 2:02.76 was good for sixth. Marie-Pierre Delisle qualified for the D Final and finished in a time of 2:03.66.

The preliminary round of the 50 Free was a close one and the final round proved just as tight. The eight A Finalists were separated by just 0.45 and Grover was one of three finishers to chart a time of 22.68 and a sixth-place standing. Liu, meanwhile, posted a time of 22.90 to take the D Final by over one second. Sarah Kaunitz joined her in the race with a fifth-place time of 23.32.

An early takeoff halted Bruin hopes in the 400 Medley Relay while the "A" Team of Grover, Liu, Goldsmith and Soe finished seventh in Wednesday's 800 Free Relay with a time of 7:09.74.

Friday's action will begin at 8:00 a.m. (PT) with the preliminary rounds of the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast and 100 Back events. At 4:00 p.m., final rounds of the same events will commence. Day 3 will conclude with the 200 Medley Relay. Real-time results from the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center are available HERE.
