Texas Invite Concludes with Trio of Top-4 Bruins

December 02, 2017 | Swimming & Diving

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Invitational wrapped Saturday and Bruins Katie Grover, Emma Schanz and Sandra Soe each registered a Top-4 finish on Day 4. It marked the second such result of the invite for Grover and Soe and the first for Schanz, who set a new school record in the 200 IM Thursday.

The 1650 Free resulted in a pair of Top-8 finishes for the Bruins, as Soe keyed a good start to the day. The junior completed her 66 laps in a time of 16:10.42, while Margaux Verger Gourson also turned in an impressive performance, clocking in at 16:14.19. Each swimmer took a major step from her preliminary swim, as Soe improved on her time by almost three seconds, while Verger Gourson upped hers by more than five.

The 200 Back saw freshman Lucy Agnew qualify for the B Final, where she cracked the two-minute mark (1:59.49). Marie-Pierre Delisle finished third in the C Final with a time of 2:00.24, while Natalie Amberg won the D Final at 2:00.77.

Kenisha Liu touched the wall at 50.29 in the 100 Free, giving the sophomore a fifth-place mark in the C Final. The D Final, meanwhile, saw Isabella Goldsmith narrowly edged out of the top spot with a time of 50.23.

Schanz capped her impressive week in the 200 Breast, where she once again finished in the top half of the A Final. The junior's 2:09.03 put her squarely in the running for a top spot after swimming a 2:11.32 in the preliminary round. Liu recorded a win in the B Final, clocking in at 2:13.66 after posting a 2:18.00 mark earlier in the day. The Kaunitz sisters rounded out the list of final-round Bruins in the 200 Breast, as Sarah competed in the C Final and Lisa in the D Final.

The 200 Fly also provided another chance for Grover to shine, and she did with a 1:55.48 in the A Final—good for fourth. Amy Okada took second in the B Final, posting a 1:57.89 time. Freshman Allison Goldblatt made the C Final, where she finished fifth with a time of 2:00.21.

Grover, Sarah Kaunitz, Liu, Okada, Schanz, Soe and Verger Gourson each posted B times over the course of the four-day invite. They will look to improve on their times with Pac-12 competition upcoming. The Bruins will travel to Oregon State Jan. 12 for a 7:00 p.m. start at the Osborn Aquatic Center.
