Bruins Hit and Pitch Their Way to Opening Sweep

SAN DIEGO - At the plate, the Bruins hit six home runs to account for 14 runs scored, while in the circle, three pitchers combined for 13 scoreless innings and 13 strikeouts, as eighth-ranked UCLA completed an opening day sweep on Friday at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Bruins beat South Dakota 6-0 and San Diego State 8-0 in six innings.

In game one, the Bruins' offense came alive after a slow start with five runs in their last two times up. UCLA totaled 11 hits, as junior Kylee Perez had three and senior Delaney Spaulding and redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia each added two, with seven of the nine starters picking up a hit. In the circle, junior Johanna Grauer struck out six in seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and posting five 1-2-3 innings. She retired 17 of the last 18 batters of the game.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Spaulding put the Bruins on the board with a solo homer to left-center. In the bottom of the fifth, the Bruins added two more, as Garcia singled up the middle for her first collegiate hit to open the frame and was pinch-run for by freshman Jenna Crawford. After a sacrifice by sophomore Zoe Shaw and a walk to Spaulding, Perez doubled to the left-center field gap to bring home both runners to make it 3-0.

In the sixth, sophomore Paige Halstead led the inning off with a homer to right to extend the advantage to 4-0. Freshman Bubba Nickles followed with a single up the middle for her first career hit, and one out later, Garcia hit the first homer of her career to center to put UCLA up by a half dozen.

In game two versus San Diego State, the Bruins added three more home runs, as seven different players collected 13 hits. Perez and Spaulding each notched three hits, while senior Gabrielle Maurice and junior Madeline Jelenicki both had two. In the circle, UCLA hurlers tossed six scoreless innings. Garcia struck out seven in five innings in her first-ever start, giving up four hits and two walks. Redshirt senior Paige McDuffee threw a scoreless sixth, giving up one hit.

Perez continued her hot hitting to stake the Bruins to a 2-0 lead in the third. Spaulding led off with a single up the middle and Perez launched a shot to straightaway center, 230 feet away, to put the visitors ahead.

In the fourth, UCLA added five more. Maurice led off the frame with a homer to right-center. One out later, Shaw doubled down the left-field line and came home on a single to left-center from Spaulding to make it 4-0. Perez then singled to left for her sixth hit of the day, and one out later, Jelenicki homered to left-center to extend the lead to 7-0.

In the sixth, the Bruins added the final run they needed to mercy the Aztecs. With runners at second and first and two outs, junior Selina Ta'amilo, in her first collegiate at-bat, singled through the left side to score Perez to make it 8-0.
