CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia tossed 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in a 3-1 win over Cal Poly, while junior Johanna Grauer spun a two-hit, complete-game shutout of UCF in a 1-0 victory for the Bruins on Friday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic I.
UCLA (7-1) had five hits from five different players in its opening contest against the Mustangs. Garcia retired the first 10 batters she faced after entering in the second inning. Following a leadoff single in the sixth, Garcia set down the last six hitters of the game, striking out the last two and four overall. Redshirt senior Paige McDuffee started the game, and on a pitch count, struck out one in 1 2/3 innings, allowing a run and two hits.
Cal Poly (4-3) scored the game's first run in the top of the second on an RBI single by Hailey Martin, but the Bruins got the run right back in their half of the second. Sophomore Paige Halsteadย tripled to left with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by junior Madeline Jelenicki.
In the third, the Bruins scored twice. Sophomore Brianna Tautalafua took the team lead in homers with three, launching one out to left to start the inning to make it 2-1. One out later, senior Delaney Spaulding doubled to left-center, and one out later, freshman Bubba Nickles singled to right to put the Bruins up 3-1.
In game two, Grauer was masterful, striking out six to improve to 3-0. Along with her two hits allowed, she gave up just one walk. Grauer retired the side in order in all the odd-numbered innings, fanning a pair in the second.
The game's only run came in the fourth. Nickles led off with a single, advanced to second on an error, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Jelenicki single to left to put UCLA (8-1) up.
The best chance for UCF (3-4) came in the sixth. The Knights got a runner to third with one out, but on a tapper to second, junior Kylee Perez came home and Halstead made a sweep tag to eliminate the runner. Grauer would retire the next four batters to finish the shutout.
The Bruins, weather permitting, will play UC Davis on Saturday at 3 p.m. Live stats, as well as live video for a fee, will be available on UCLABruins.com.
