No. 4 UCLA Posts a Pair of Wins on Saturday

The Bruins beat #10 LSU, 3-2, and #12 FIU, 4-1, at the East Meets West Invitational.

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif.,ย -- No. 4 UCLA (4-2) posted two wins on Saturday over nationally-ranked opponents on the first day of the inaugural East Meets West Invitational at the Manhattan Beach Pier.
UCLA began the day with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over No. 10 LSU (1-4). The Bruins went up 1-0ย on court one when Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara defeated LSU's Emmy Allen and Ashley Allmerย in straight sets, 21-13, 21-12.
But the Tigers would tie it up at 1-1 in a tight affair with a straight-set win of their own on court five as Catiย Leak and Megan Davenport beat the Bruins' freshman duo of Lily Justine and Chanti Holroyd, 21-19, 23-12.
LSU would then take the lead at 2-1 after Claire Coppola and Kristen Nussย defeated UCLA's Kamilaย Tan and Madi Yeomansย in two identical sets of 21-17.
That set up the dramatic comeback which started on court three as UCLA's freshman pair of Savvy Simo and Torrey Van Windenย battled for a three-set win over LSU's Olivia Powers and Katie Lindelow, 21-19, 20-22, 15-11.
Then on court four, the Bruins' tandem of Elise Zappia and Izzyย Carey rallied after dropping the first set to defeat Riley Young and Maddie Ligon, 25-27, 21-13, 15-11.

UCLA concluded the day with a 4-1 win over No. 12 FIU (5-3). The outcome was never in jeopardy as the Bruins won the first three points to seal the team win.
Again the dynamic duo of Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara posted a straight-set win over FIU's Katie Hogan and Katie Freisen, 21-18, 21-9.
UCLA's Elise Zappia and Izzy Carey decided to get off to a better start in their second match of the day on court four, sweeping the Panthers' duo of Bela Sataric and Estefanie Bethancourt, 21-13, 21-17, to remain undefeated on the year at 6-0.
The Bruins' Kamila Tan and Madi Yeomans bounced back to seal the team win on court two with a 21-14, 21-19 win over FIU'sย Helene Thelleย and Kari Peterson.
Freshmen Savvy Simo and Torrey Van Winden paired up to take down the Panthers' tandem of Lina Bernier and Naty Giron, 21-16, 21-13, to put UCLA up 4-0.
Another UCLA freshman duo, Lily Justine and Chanti Holroyd, was again involved in a tight affair with three sets all being decided by three points or less. But the Bruin pair couldn't hold on down the stretch, falling 18-21, 21-19, 15-13, to FIU's Bianca Bianchin and Taija Thomas.
Day two of the East Meets West Invitational continues tomorrow at Manhattan Beach Pier. Sunday's action begins with Cal Poly vs. #10 LSU at 9:00 a.m. UCLA will be in action twice when it takes on #7 Georgia State at 11:00 a.m. and concludes with #2 Florida State at 3:00 p.m. Don't forget to move your clock up one hour tomorrow for Daylight Savings Time!
