No. 3 UCLA Posts Three 5-0 Sweeps

The Bruins blanked Portland, San Jose State and San Francisco at the Monterey Invitational on Friday.

MONTEREY, Calif., -- No. 3 UCLA (9-2) posted three sweeps on Friday at the Monterey Invitational at the Monterey Bay Park Sand Courts at Window by the Bay Park. The Bruins won 5-0 over Portland (3-2) at 9:00 a.m., 5-0 over the hosts San Jose State (5-2) at Noon and then defeated San Francisco (0-8) 5-0 at 3:00 p.m. to close out the day with their seventh-consecutive win. UCLA used every opportunity to mix up its lineup and some of its pairs during the first of a two-day event.

On court one, the Bruins' sophomore pair of Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara had no trouble with Portland's Tani Stephens and Cali Thompson, winning 21-11, 21-9.

A relatively easy straight-set win on court two followed when freshman Madi Yeomans and Kamila Tan defeated the Pilots' Katie Barker and Hannah Troutman, 21-10, 21-13.

Portland was able to win a set on court three, but the Bruins' pair of Elise Zappia and Izzy Carey rallied to win a three-set match over Morgan Robinson and Emma Scanlan, 19-21, 21-17, 15-12.

The Bruins' relatively new pair of Jordan Anderson and Chanti Holroyd posted a straight-set win on court four over Portland's Sarah Savoca and Djurdjina Milovic, 21-19, 21-14.

Court five saw the season-debut of Jasmine Hogan and Remy Wilson, who teamed up to beat the Pilots' Monica Gajda and Lauren Naatz, 21-15, 21-12.

In the second match of the day, UCLA twins Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara defeated San Jose State's Lyndi Scholl and Allison Meehan in straight sets, 21-16, 21-16. on court one.

On court two, UCLA's Madi Yeomans and Kamila Tan defeated the Spartans' Julie Sam and Nandyala Gama, 21-12, 21-16.

Freshman Torrey Van Winden returned to the line-up on court three and paired with Elise Zappia to defeat SJSU's Julia Golbeck and Luiza Andrade, 22-20, 21-12.

UCLA's Jordan Anderson paired with Izzy Carey to post a straight-set win over Giulia Gavio and Jamie Hirai on court four, 21-18, 21-16.

The Bruins' Chanti Holroyd and Lily Justine reunited on court five to defeat SJSU's Summer Avery and Kaitlynn Zdroik, 21-12, 21-18.

In the third and final match of the day, the McNamara twins got some rest, allowing most of the Bruins' pairs to move up a flight.

The battle began on court one with Madi Yeomans and Kamila Tan moving up to defeat San Francisco's Nora Buvarp Lavik and Emily Reed in straight sets, 21-12, 21-16.

UCLA's Torrey Van Winden and Elise Zappia paired up on court two to beat USF's Camille Araujo and Marjolijn Oskam, 21-19, 21-8.

On court three, Jordan Anderson and Izzy Carey posted a straight-set win over the Dons' Carly Lowry and Dane Miller, 21-12, 21-15.

The Bruins' Chanti Holroyd and Lily Justine moved up to court four to post an easy 21-9, 21-8 win over Kate Ashman and Shannon Levinson.

The sweep was complete without dropping a set as Remy Wilson and Jasmine Hogan returned on court five to beat USF's Trish Koutsoukos and Montana Green by identical set scores of 21-7.

The Bruins return to action tomorrow when they face a pair of ranked teams. UCLA will open with #13 Grand Canyon at 9:00 a.m. and conclude the tournament with #20 Saint Mary's at 1:00 p.m.
