#15 UCLA HOSTS BYU, DARTMOUTH DURING PAC-12 BYE
The 15th-ranked Bruins take a weekend off from Pac-12 play, hosting a Saturday doubleheader against BYU at 12 p.m. and a Sunday game versus Dartmouth at 10 a.m. at Easton Stadium. All three games will feature free live audio and live stats on UCLABruins.com.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Bruins go on the road for the first time in Pac-12 play next weekend, traveling to Seattle for a three-game series at #5 Washington. The series begins on Friday at 6 p.m., continues on Saturday at 4 p.m. and concludes on Sunday at 5 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
UCLA dropped five positions in both national polls, falling to 15th in the USA Today/NFCA rankings and 16th in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. The Bruins were first in the Pac-12 preseason coaches poll, earning three first-place votes and 59 points.
NEWS AND NOTES
The Bruins are three wins away from 1,800 as a program ... UCLA had 17 comeback victories last season and already has eight this year ... the Bruins were 22-0 last year when leading after five innings and 23-0 when up after six. This year, UCLA is 14-0 and 15-0 in those instances ... the Bruins led the nation in double plays last season (45) and have 13 in 2017 (tied for 17th) ... UCLA is also tied for fourth in the country in home runs (36) and 17th in slugging (.519) entering this week's play ... eight of UCLA's 36 homers have been hit on the first pitch of an at-bat ... five of the seven victories for redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia have been in relief, as she is 5-1 with a 1.42 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 44 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. Garcia tossed 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief last Friday against #20 Utah ... junior Johanna Grauer tossed nine shutout innings at the Louisville Slugger Invitational in picking up two victories. She has allowed zero or one run in 11 of her 16 appearances, recording a 0.66 ERA, a 7-0 record and 53 strikeouts in as many innings in those 11 contests ... sophomore Paige Halstead had singles in all four games at Long Beach State. She opened the season with hits in 15 of her first 18 games ... junior Madeline Jelenicki has hits in eight of her last 10 contests, with six of those games being two-hit affairs, including one in the series finale with #20 Utah. Defensively, she has yet to commit an error in 148 attempts ... senior Gabrielle Maurice hit her third homer of the season against Baylor on March 5, a two-run shot. It was her third multi-RBI contest of the season ... redshirt senior Paige McDuffee allowed just one hit in three innings against Boston University on March 11 ... freshman Bubba Nickles broke a home-run drought in a big way two weekends ago, leaving the yard against Boston and Texas, the latter being the go-ahead shot in the sixth inning. The other two homers for Nickles came in a Feb. 11 doubleheader against Weber State ... junior Kylee Perez comes into this week's play ranked tied for sixth in the nation in doubles (11) and tied for 12th in hits (42). She also sits fifth in UCLA history in batting average at .393 ... sophomore Zoe Shaw drove in runs in three straight games against ranked teams on Feb. 25 versus LSU, Feb. 26 against Florida State and March 2 versus Michigan. She also had singles in the first and third games of the series with #20 Utah last weekend ... senior Delaney Spaulding has hits in 24 of her 28 contests, including a single in game one last weekend and a double in game two. She is in the UCLA Top 10 in 10 categories, including second in runs scored (206) and third in doubles (53) and slugging percentage (.729) ... junior Selina Ta'amilo has not allowed an earned run in 21 1/3 consecutive innings, picking up three wins last weekend. Leading the team in ERA at 1.06, she has struck out 17 in those 21 1/3 frames, giving up just 12 hits and three unearned runs ... sophomore Brianna Tautalafua had hits in all three games last weekend and has hits in nine of her last 10 games, batting .345 (10-for-29) with five homers and 12 RBI during that stretch. Tautalafua has homers in five of her last nine and is tied for 15th in the country with nine long balls.
SCOUTING THE BYU COUGARS
BYU, which hosts Utah on Wednesday and plays Dartmouth in a Friday doubleheader at UCLA, holds an 18-7 record entering this week's play. The Cougars are 2-4 against ranked teams this season, defeating Washington and Georgia, while falling to Oklahoma, Auburn, Arizona and Texas A&M. BYU is hitting .313 as a team with 20 home runs and 35 stolen bases, averaging 5.8 runs per game. Sophomore Lexi Tarrow leads the squad with a .426 batting average, sophomore Libby Sugg is first with five home runs and 25 runs batted in and senior Ashley Thompson is first with 11 stolen bases and second with four homers and 19 RBI. Senior McKenna Bull has pitched over 55 percent of the Cougars' innings, going 13-2 with a 1.98 earned run average and 93 strikeouts in 88 1/3 innings. Junior Arianna Paulson is next best on the team with a 4.33 ERA, a 3-1 record and 13 strikeouts in 21 innings. The Bruins are 4-1 all-time against BYU, winning the most recent matchup last February in Cathedral City (9-4).
SCOUTING THE DARTMOUTH BIG GREEN
Dartmouth (0-14-1) is in the midst of its California trip, having played at Loyola Marymount last weekend, as well as on Tuesday. The Big Green will also play two games on Friday at UCLA and two in Riverside on Saturday before Sunday's contest versus the Bruins. Dartmouth is hitting .232 with seven home runs and 15 stolen bases, averaging 2.4 runs per game. Freshman Calista Almer (.333) and senior Maddie Damore (.300) are each hitting at least .300. In the circle, junior Breanna Ethridge holds a 6.33 earned run average and 35 strikeouts in 54 innings, while freshman Morgan Ebow has fanned six in 19 2/3 frames. The Bruins will be playing the Big Green for the first time on Sunday.
