KAPALUA, MAUI, HAWAI'I - Sophomore Lilia Vu fired an opening-round, 5-under 67 on Monday at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic at the Kapalua Bay Course, and holds a four-shot lead after 18 holes. As a team, the Bruins are also in first place.
UCLA shot a 3-over 291 and is up by two shots over Colorado and San Jose State.
Vu, one of only three players under par after 18 holes, was on fire on the back nine of The Bay Course. Starting on the eighth, she made birdies on #10, #12, #13, #15 and #16, eventually getting to 6-under for her round with a birdie on the first. Her lone blemish of the round was a bogey on the third, as Vu posted her fifth sub-70 round of the season.
Fellow sophomore Bethany Wu is tied for 16th at 2-over after an opening-round 74. Opening on #10, she made birdies on #17, #1, #6 and #7 to go with four bogeys and a double. A trio of Bruins are tied for 23rd after shooting 3-over 75. Freshmen Mariel Galdiano (#10, #15 and #16) and Clare Legaspi (#11, #15 and #1) each made three birdies to go with six bogeys. Junior Erin Choi notched one birdie on the 18th, adding four bogeys.
Of the three Bruin individuals, senior Hadas Libman has the low score at 4-over 76, tying her for 30th. Starting on #14, she had four birdies on #15, #18, #6 and #8 to go with four bogeys and two doubles. Junior Joo Seo is tied for 43rd at 6-over (78). She had birdies on #1 and #7, six bogeys and a double. Junior Lydia Choi is tied for 53rd at 7-over (79). She had five bogeys and a double.
It will be another shotgun start for UCLA for Tuesday's second round, which starts at 7:45 a.m. HT/10:45 a.m. PT. The Bruins' scoring fivesome will begin on holes #8-#11, while the three individuals will start on holes #13-#15. Live scoring will be available here.
