Bruins Beat Three More Teams on Saturday

#3 UCLA took down #4 Florida State, #15 FIU and Tulane to conclude the FIU Surf & Turf Invitational.

MIAMI, Fla., -- No. 3 UCLA (19-2) posted three more dual wins to conclude the FIU Surf and Turf Invitational with a 6-0 mark, extending its school-record winning streak to 17 straight dual victories. The Bruins began the day with an impressive 4-1 win over #4 Florida State (15-6), its second victory over the Seminoles this season. Then the Bruins took down the hosts, #15 FIU (17-8) at Lummus Park Courts by an identical 4-1 score. The Bruins concluded the Invitational with a 5-0 win over Tulane (15-8).

In the win over Florida State, senior Jordan Anderson and sophomore Izzy Carey got the Bruins on the board first with a straight-set victory on court four over FSU's Katie Horton and Molly McBain, 21-17, 21-16.

UCLA went up 2-0 after the Bruins' sophomore pair of Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara posted a straight-set win on court one over the Seminoles' Leigh Andrew and Brooke Kuhlman, 21-16, 24-22.

Another straight-set win for the Bruins on court three sealed the team victory for UCLA as freshman Torrey Van Winden and junior Elise Zappia defeated FSU's Macy Jerger and Victoria Paranagua, 21-19, 25-23.

The Bruins went up 4-0 after freshman Madi Yeomans and senior Kamila Tan defeated Vanessa Freire and Francesca Goncalves on court two in straight sets, 21-14, 21-19.

UCLA's only casualty of the match came in a hard-fought three-set thriller on court five as the freshman duo of Lily Justine and Chanti Holroyd fell to Hailey Luke and Eva Torruella, 18-21, 22-20, 15-12.

In the second match of the day, the Bruins' freshman pair of Lily Justine and Chanti Holroyd won the first team point, rallying to win a three-set thriller on court five, defeating FIU's Lina Bernier and Natalia Giron, 18-21, 21-16, 15-11.

UCLA went up 2-0 after a straight-set win on court three by freshman Torrey Van Winden and junior Elise Zappia over the Panther's Estefanie Bethancourt and Anabela Sataric, 21-16, 21-14.

Court two proved to be the deciding court when UCLA took a 3-0 lead as freshman Madi Yeomans and senior Kamila Tan won in straight sets, 21-16, 21-10, over Kari Peterson and Taija Thomas.

The Bruins' tandem of sophomore Izzy Carey and senior Jordan Anderson on court four put UCLA up 4-0 with an epic win in game one (35-33) and a tight win in game two (21-19) over FIU's Katie Hogan and Helene Thelle.

The only casualty for the Bruins came on court one as the sophomore pair of Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara fell in three sets to Margherita Bianchin and Federica Frasca, 26-24, 13-21, 16-14.

In the third and final match of the day and the Invitational, the Bruins used it as an opportunity to move around some puzzle pieces, and in one case, reunite a pair at court three, and they did so without dropping a set.

The Bruins' sophomore pair of Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara rebounded to defeat Tulane's Madeline Mertz and Lan Nguyen, 21-17, 21-8.

Freshman Savvy Simo saw her first action of the day on court four, pairing up with senior Jordan Anderson to beat the Green Waves' Tarin Mergener and Annie Shurtz, 21-15, 21-17.

UCLA's freshman duo of Chanti Holroyd and Lily Justine sealed the team win, putting UCLA up 3-0 with a win on court five over Sarah Strasner and Christina McAfee, 22-20, 21-17.

Senior Kamila Tan welcomed a new partner on court two, freshman Torrey Van Winden. The Bruin duo took down Tulane's Tea Juric and Kaylie McHugh, 21-18, 21-14.

As they did in yesterday's finale, junior Elise Zappia and sophomore Izzy Carey were reunited on court three and posted a 21-16, 21-18 victory over Hannah Holmes and Briana Correa to complete the 5-0 sweep.

The Bruins return to action on Wednesday, April 5, when they host #20 Cal Poly at Noon at Sunset Canyon Beach Volleyball Courts. The dual will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks. Another televised dual will follow at 3:00 p.m. PT when UCLA hosts Loyola Marymount.
