STANFORD, Calif. โ Griffin Canning tossed a complete game shutout and tied a career-high with 12 strikeouts as the UCLA baseball team earned a 2-0 victory at No. 18 Stanford in the series opener on Thursday from Sunken Diamond.
Canning (3-2) throws his first complete game shutout since April 15, 2016 at Washington and his first complete game since his final start of 2016 at Oregon State. He tied a career-high with 12 strikeouts for the third time this season. He did not walk a batter and surrendered just four hits.
UCLA scored the game's opening run in the top of the first inning as Chase Strumpf drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Daniel Amaral. After five scoreless innings for both teams, the Bruins pushed its lead to 2-0 in the seventh inning as Jack Stronach hit a RBI-single down the left-field line to bring home Kyle Cuellar from second base.
Strumpf finished the game 1-for-2 with two walks, while Stronach went 1-for-3 with a walk.
Stanford starter Kris Bubic (2-6) suffered the loss tossing 6.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
UCLA finished the game with two runs on six hits with one error, while Stanford ended the game with no runs, four hits and two errors.
The Bruins will play game two of this three-game Pac-12 series on Friday beginning at 7 p.m. (PT) from Sunken Diamond. The game will be televised live on the Pac-12 Network.
