Bruins Top Kingsmen, Set for USC Finale

April 19, 2017 | Men's Tennis

LOS ANGELES -- In its final non-conference tune-up before the regular-season-closing rivalry match, the No. 8 UCLA men's tennis team defeated Cal Lutheran Wednesday at Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts, 7-0. The Bruins won every set against the Division III Kingsmen, who play in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC).

In doubles, a pair Bruin duos made their 2017 debuts, as Daniel Gealer joined Evan Zhu on Court 2, while Travis Martin paired with Gage Brymer on Court 3. The senior team of Martin and Brymer struck first, as it defeated Cal Lutheran's team of Joshua Legardy and Kylel Gillam, 6-1. Then, with a clinching point in its sights, UCLA's freshman team of Zhu and Gealer topped Lucas Tilly and Austin Wong of the Kingsmen by an identical 6-1 score. The Court 1 match between UCLA's Maxime Cressy-Ben Goldberg and Cal Lutheran's Dara Kashani-Jake Haffner went unfinished.

Goldberg would not leave Sunset Courts without a decision, however, as the freshman got singles play started with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mike Sulahian on Court 4. Then, in his first singles action since the beginning of February, Joseph Di Giulio blanked Cal Lutheran's Sebastian Ariza on Court 5, 6-0, 6-0. No. 57 Martin Redlicki clinched the match on Court 2, as the junior defeated Tilly by a 6-1, 6-0 score.

The teams played out the rest of the matches, as Logan Staggs next dispatched Haffner on Court 3, 6-3, 6-1. Top singles players Brymer and Kashani battled it out on Court 1, where the Bruin senior topped the Kingsmen junior, 6-2, 6-0. To round out action, Michael Guzman manned Court 6 in the penultimate match of his final homestand. The Bruin senior completed action with a straight-set win of his own, 6-4, 6-3, over Wong.

Next up for UCLA is a Friday showdown with crosstown rival and No. 6 USC. The winner of the match will determine the top seed at next week's Pac-12 Championships in Ojai, Calif. Play at Sunset Courts will begin at 3:00 p.m.
