NINTH-RANKED UCLA HOSTS #1 OREGON AT EASTON STADIUM
The ninth-ranked Bruins return to Easton Stadium this weekend to take on #1 Oregon. Friday and Saturday's games will be 7 p.m. starts and will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Network. Sunday's contest will be a 2 p.m. first pitch and televised live on ESPN2. Live stats will be available for all three games at UCLABruins.com, while free live audio will be available for Sunday's contest.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Bruins venture to Corvallis to face Oregon State for a Thursday-Saturday series next week. The teams play Thursday, April 13 at 2 p.m., Friday, April 14 at 3 p.m. and Saturday, April 15 at 2 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on Pac-12 Network.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
UCLA moved back into the Top 10 in this week's USA Today/NFCA poll, jumping from 13th to ninth. The Bruins also improved two positions from 14th to 12th to the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. UCLA was first in the Pac-12 preseason coaches poll, earning three first-place votes and 59 points.
NEWS AND NOTES
The Bruins recorded the program's 1,800th victory with their win on March 26 against Dartmouth ... UCLA had 17 comeback victories last season and already has nine this year, including another one versus Dartmouth ... the Bruins were 22-0 last year when leading after five innings and 23-0 when up after six. This year, UCLA is 19-0 and 20-0 in those instances ... the Bruins led the nation in double plays last season (45) and have 16 in 2017 (T-20th) ... UCLA also entered this week's play tied for sixth in home runs (42), 10th in slugging (.517) and 33rd in batting average (.316) ... after leaving the yard in her first collegiate game against South Dakota on Feb. 10, redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia got back in the home run column in back-to-back contests (March 31-April 1) last weekend in Seattle. In the circle, she picked up both Bruin victories against Washington and is the team leader in earned run average at 1.81 ... junior Johanna Grauer tossed nine shutout innings at the Louisville Slugger Invitational in picking up two victories. She has allowed zero or one earned run in 13 of her 20 appearances, recording a 0.77 ERA, an 8-0 record and 55 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings in those contests ... sophomore Paige Halstead had hits in all three games at Washington, going 6-for-11 (.545) with three RBI in the series. She had three-straight, multiple-hit contests from March 26-April 1, going 3-for-3 versus Dartmouth and 2-for-4 and 3-for-4 in the first two contests in Seattle ... junior Madeline Jelenicki also had a hit in each game at UW, adding at least one RBI in all three contests, going 4-for-10 (.400) with six RBI. She has hits in 12 of her last 16 contests, with eight of those games being two-hit affairs, as she had two hits and three RBI in the series finale at Washington ... senior Gabrielle Maurice has hits in three of her last five games, including a two-hit contest in the second game of a doubleheader against BYU on March 25. She reached in all three games at Washington, posting two hits, two walks and two hit by pitches ... freshman Bubba Nickles ended the Washington series on a high note, going 4-for-8 in the last two contests to snap a seven-game hitless streak. Three of her hits were doubles, while the fourth was a homer in the series finale as she drove in three in that game to tie a season high ... junior Kylee Perez has multiple-hit contests in four of her last six, as she continues to lead the team in that category with 16. She posted a pair of two-hit games to open the Washington series and drove in runs in all three matchups ... sophomore Zoe Shaw has hits in six of her last nine games. She drove in multiple runs for the first time this season with a two-RBI contest against Dartmouth ... senior Delaney Spaulding has hits in 28 of her 35 contests, recording a single in game one at UW and a double in game two. She is in the UCLA Top 10 in 10 categories, including second in runs scored (210), third in doubles (55) and tied for third in slugging percentage (.719) ... junior Selina Ta'amilo did not allow an earned run in 21 1/3 consecutive innings from March 3-12. She pitched in each of the last two games at Washington last weekend ... sophomore Brianna Tautalafua has hits in 13 of her last 16 games after going 4-for-11 (.364) in the Washington series. She hit a two-run homer in game two, her team-best 10th, and reached base three times in the series finale on two singles and a walk.
SCOUTING THE OREGON DUCKS
Oregon is the last remaining undefeated team in the nation, entering this weekend's series at 35-0 after a Tuesday doubleheader sweep against Portland State. The Ducks are 8-0 in Pac-12 play, taking three at home against both California and Arizona State and two in a rain-shortened series at Utah. Oregon is batting .356 as a team with 30 home runs and 56 stolen bases, averaging 7.2 runs per game. Sophomore Alexis Mack leads the team with a .462 average and is second with 12 stolen bases, senior Danica Mercado is second at .435 and first with 16 steals and senior Nikki Udria is third at .427 and first with seven homers and 34 RBI. In the circle, freshman Maggie Balint is 16-0 with a 0.86 earned run average and 112 strikeouts in 81 2/3 innings, sophomore Megan Kleist is 10-0 with a 0.98 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 78 1/3 innings and freshman Miranda Elish is 8-0 with a 1.35 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 62 innings.
THE SERIES: BRUINS VS. DUCKS
The Bruins were the last team to saddle the Ducks with a loss, winning twice by 2-1 scores last May 29 in Eugene at the NCAA Super Regionals to advance to the Women's College World Series and eliminate Oregon from the postseason. UCLA leads the all-time series with Oregon 80-24, which includes a 33-11 record at Easton Stadium. The Ducks won the last series in Westwood in 2015 by a 2-1 margin.
