UCLA Earns Walk-Off Victory Over Washington

LOS ANGELES - Zander Clarke drove in the game-winning run, while Jake Bird threw 2.0 shutout innings as the UCLA baseball team earned a 6-5 walk-off win on Sunday in the series finale against Washington from Jackie Robinson Stadium. Kyle Cuellar went 4-for-5 with one RBI and Jack Stronach collected three hits and drove in two runs.
Down by one run going into the ninth inning, Sean Bouchard led off with a single to left field, followed by Cuellar hitting a double down the right-field line. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Stronach drove in the game-tying run with a single to right field for his second RBI of the game. Pinch hitter Zander Clarke would give the Bruins the victory as he lifted a fly ball to left field that brought home Jake Hirabayashi for the walk-off win.
The Bruins fell behind by five runs early but chipped away at Washington's lead for the rest of the game. Stronach drove in UCLA's first run of the game in the fourth inning with a RBI-single to left-center field. The Bruins cut the lead to 5-3 after a single by Cuellar in the fifth inning brought homme Brett Stephens and a single in the sixth inning off the bat of Michael Toglia scored Stronach in the sixth inning. UCLA made it a one-run game in the eighth inning as Stephens lined out to right field to plate Ryan Kreidler on a sacrifice fly.
The Huskies scored all five of their runs with two outs in the top of the fourth inning. MJ Hubbs hit a solo home run to center field to start the scoring and AJ Graffanino hit a two-run single to center field.
Bird (3-0) earns the win for UCLA tossing the final 2.0 innings without allowing a run, while starter Jon Olsen takes a no-decision after tossing 3.2 innings allowing five runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Bird and Scott Burke combined to throw 5.1 shutout innings in relief and allowed just one hit.
Washington's Greg Minier (0-1) suffered the loss allowing two runs on three hits in one-plus inning of work. UW's Joe DeMers started the game and allowed three runs in 5.0 innings.
UCLA ended the game with six runs on 12 hits, while Washington finished with five runs on six hits.The Bruins will be on the road this weekend when they travel to Stanford to begin a three-game Pac-12 series starting on Thursday at 6 p.m. (PT). All three games of the series will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
