LOS ANGELES - The fifth-seeded Bruins hit four home runs on Saturday, as UCLA posted its second mercy-rule win in the NCAA Tournament with a 10-2, six-inning triumph over San Jose State at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins (44-13) advance to Sunday's Regional Championship game at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3, with live audio available on UCLABruins.com.
All nine starters had hits for UCLA, which produced 13 as a team. Juniors Madeline Jelenicki and Kylee Perez and freshmen Rachel Garcia and Bubba Nickles each recorded a pair of hits. In the circle, junior Selina Ta'amilo improved to 14-0, pitching 2 1/3 innings of relief and giving up a run, two hits and three walks. Junior Johanna Grauer earned her first save of the season, fanning one in 2 2/3 frames and allowing a run, a hit and two walks. Garcia started and struck out one in one shutout inning giving up a hit and a walk.
UCLA, playing as the visiting team, scored in its first at-bat. Senior Delaney Spaulding led off with a walk and Perez reached on a bunt hit. Sophomore Brianna Tautalafua followed with a deep fly ball to center, as a great catch was made by San Jose State. Spaulding tagged and moved to third, and when the throw in got away, the senior came home to score the game's first run.
In the second, the Bruins scored three times. Nickles led off with a double and scored one out later on a single through the right side by sophomore Zoe Shaw to make it 2-0. Spaulding then hit her second homer of the Regional and 16th of the season, leaving the yard to right field, to extend the lead to 4-0.
San Jose State (37-18) got on the board in the third on a sacrifice fly by Cassidy Clark to make it 4-1.
UCLA added three each in the fifth and sixth innings to break it open. Tautalafua opened the fifth with a walk and was pinch-run for by freshman Jenna Crawford, who came home on Jelenicki's bomb to center, her second homer of the weekend and 14th of the season, to put the Bruins up 6-1. Garcia would make it back-to-back jacks, homering to right-center for her sixth of the season to make it 7-1.
In the sixth, Perez laced a one-out single to right and came home on Tautalafua's second homer of the Regional and 15th of the season, a shot to center, to increase the lead to 9-1. Jelenicki followed with a single to left and was pinch-run for by sophomore Stevie Wisz, who moved to second on a grounder by freshman Jacqui Prober, advanced to third on an infield single for senior Gabrielle Maurice and scored on a Spartan error on a grounder by sophomore Taylor Pack to make it 10-1.
San Jose State scored its second run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth, and had a chance to extend the game, but left two on base to fall 10-2.
