#12 BRUINS HOST #3 ARIZONA ON SENIOR WEEKEND
The 12th-ranked Bruins close out their regular-season home schedule this weekend at Easton Stadium, hosting #3 Arizona. The series starts on Friday at 5 p.m., continues on Saturday at 6 p.m. and ends on Sunday at 1 p.m. Friday's contest will air on Pac-12 Network, while Saturday and Sunday's games will be televised on ESPN2. Seniors Gabrielle Maurice, Paige McDuffee and Delaney Spaulding will be honored prior to Sunday's contest.ย
WHAT'S NEXT
The Bruins conclude the regular season next weekend at Arizona State (Thursday, May 11 at 6 p.m.; Friday, May 12 at 5 p.m.; Saturday, May 13 at 2 p.m.). All three games will be televised on Pac-12 Network. On Sunday, May 13, ESPNU will air the NCAA Selection Show at 7 p.m.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
UCLA is 12th in both national polls this week for the second week in a row, earning 447 points in the USA Today/NFCA poll and 273 points in the ESPN.com/USA Softball rankings.
NEWS AND NOTES
The Bruins recorded the program's 1,800th victory with their win on March 26 against Dartmouth ... UCLA had 17 comeback victories last season and have 12 this season, including three walk-off wins ... redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia came into last week's action with nine two-hit games, but then in back-to-back contests recorded her first three- and four-hit games. Garcia had two singles and a double at CSUN last Wednesday and followed that up with two singles and two doubles at Stanford last Friday. Garcia has hits in 16 of her last 19 games to raise her average from .261 to .328 ... Garcia didn't allow an earned run in 16 straight innings from April 21-26, striking out 18. In her 33 appearances, she has given up one or zero earned runs in 22 of them ... junior Johanna Grauer posted her 10th win of the season at Stanford last Friday, striking out three in four innings of relief. Grauer has double figures in wins all three seasons ... sophomore Paige Halstead had hits in all three games at Stanford, going 4-for-10 (.400). She hit her fifth homer of the season last Friday and her first since March 25 ... junior Madeline Jelenicki posted hits in all four games last week, driving in nine runs. She tied a career high with five RBI in game one at Stanford thanks to a pair of two-run doubles and a bases-loaded walk ... senior Gabrielle Maurice currently has a career-high, 10-game hitting streak in which she is batting .375 (12-for-32) with two RBI. During her streak, her average has been raised 50 points from .168 to .218 ... freshman Bubba Nickles has hits in eight of her last 10 contests. On April 23 versus California, Nickles recorded the first two-homer game of her career ... junior Kylee Perez tied a school record last Friday when she had five hits in the first game at Stanford, the ninth time a Bruin has accomplished that feat. Perez also set a personal best with four runs scored and has touched home plate seven times in her last four games along with her 10 hits ... sophomore Zoe Shaw, the Bruins' leading hitter during Pac-12 play (.415), has hits in six in a row and nine of her last 10, batting .520 (13-for-25) during her last 10 contests. She has three multiple-hit contests in this run and has crossed home plate twice in a game three times ... senior Delaney Spaulding drove in seven runs in the series at Stanford and has 11 RBI in her last five contests. Four of her seven multi-RBI games have come during April ... the number 5 2/3 was the magic number for junior Selina Ta'amilo last week, as she struck out eight at CSUN last Wednesday in that many innings and four in relief last Sunday at Stanford. She picked up three of UCLA's four wins last week to improve to 12-0 on the season and come within two victories of the most recent undefeated campaign in Bruin history (Michelle Turner, 14-0, 2003) ... sophomore Brianna Tautalafua had four hits last week, including a pair of doubles. She had a career game against Cal State Fullerton on April 18 when she went 4-for-4 with four RBI and a pair of home runs.
SCOUTING THE ARIZONA WILDCATS
Arizona brings a 47-5 overall record and a 17-4 Pac-12 mark into this weekend's action. The Wildcats are hitting .342 as a team with an NCAA-best 87 home runs, as well as 17 stolen bases, averaging 7.6 runs per game. Eight players are hitting at least .300, led by senior Mo Mercado, who is batting .401 with 10 homers and 49 RBI. Senior Katiyana Mauga is hitting .359 with a team-best 22 homers and 55 RBI, while freshman Jessie Harper is second on the squad with 18 homers to go with a .350 average and 47 RBI. In the circle, senior Danielle O'Toole is 26-3 with a 0.95 earned run average and 180 strikeouts in 184 1/3 innings and sophomore Taylor McQuillin is 15-2 with a 1.70 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 99 innings.
THE SERIES: BRUINS VS. WILDCATS
UCLA leads the all-time series against Arizona 83-56 and has won 10 of the last 11 versus the Wildcats. The Bruins have swept Arizona in each of the last two matchups at Easton Stadium (2014-2015), where they hold a 44-21 edge. UCLA has scored at least six runs in eight of the 10 games during its 10-1 streak.
