OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -ย Redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia struck out seven in a complete-game effort, and the fifth-ranked Bruins piled up eight hits, but fell one run short in a 2-1 loss to #13 LSU on Thursday at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium.

The Bruins (47-14) fall into the loser's bracket and are off on Friday. UCLA will face #9 Texas A&M on Saturday in an elimination contest at 9 a.m. PT/11 a.m. CT. The game will air live on ESPN.

Garcia produced 1-2-3 innings in the fourth, sixth and seventh, retiring the last eight batters of the game, striking out at least one in six of her seven frames, including two in the sixth. She limited LSU (48-20) to six hits, while walking none. Seven different Bruins accounted for the eight hits, including two by senior Delaney Spaulding.

LSU, playing as the visiting team, quickly scored in the top of the first on back-to-back doubles by Emily Griggs and Sahvanna Jaquish.ย

In the bottom of the third, the Bruins rallied to tie the game. Sophomore Zoe Shaw and Spaulding led off with back-to-back singles, with a sacrifice by junior Kylee Perez moving both runners into scoring position. Sophomore Brianna Tautalafua followed with a comebackerย that was fumbled by the LSU pitcher, who would still get the out at first, but Shaw scampered home to even things at one.

A controversial call in the fifth gave LSU the go-ahead run. After Constance Quinn led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice, Amber Serrett dunked a single into right. Shaw came up with an outstanding throw to sophomore Paige Halstead, who applied the tag on Quinn for what appeared to be an out. However, the home plate umpire inexplicably ruled obstruction on Halstead for not allowing Quinn to reach the plate. The incorrect call gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead, which would end up holding up.
