OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -ย The 1-2-3 hitters in the UCLA lineup went 8-for-12 with six runs batted in, as junior Kylee Perez had three hits and two RBI, sophomore Brianna Tautalafua added three hits and an RBI and senior Delaney Spaulding posted two hits and three RBI, as the fifth-seeded Bruins extended their season with an 8-2 victory over #9 Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Bruins (48-14) will face #6-seed Washington in another elimination game at 4 p.m. PT/6 p.m. CT, weather permitting. The game will air on ESPN.
Redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia (23-8) struck out a pair in six innings of work, giving up a run, three hits and two walks. She retired the last seven batters she faced, posting 1-2-3 frames in the fifth and sixth. Junior Selina Ta'amiloย finished the game up in the seventh, striking out one and allowing a run and a hit. At the plate, the Bruins had 11 hits from six different players.ย
UCLA, playing as the visiting team, scored in its initial at-bat, as Perez launched her third homer of the season to center. In the second, the Bruins added two more. Garcia led off with a walk, and one out later, moved to second on a single to left-center from freshman Bubba Nickles. One out later, sophomore Zoe Shaw walked to load the bases and Spaulding followed with a single to right to plate both Garcia and Nickles to make it 3-0.
Texas A&M (47-13) got on the board in the fourth on a solo homer by Riley Sartain, but it could have been a two-run shot, as Perez made a diving catch of a liner up the middle by Ashley Walters in the previous at-bat.
In the seventh, the Bruins tacked on five runs to break it open. Sophomore Paige Halstead reached on an error to open the inning and was pinch-run for by sophomore Imani Johnson, who advanced to second on a Shaw sacrifice and scored on a double to left-center by Spaulding to make it 4-1. A Perez single up the middle brought in Spaulding to extend the lead to 5-1, while a Tautalafua double down the left-field line plated Perez to make it 6-1. One out later, Garcia left the yard to left for her eighth of the season to bring the Bruins' lead to 8-1.
A two-out homer by Celena Massey in the bottom of the seventh made it 8-2, but Ta'amilo shut the door to advance the Bruins to a matchup with Pac-12 foe Washington.
