NORFOLK, Va. โ The UCLA swimming and diving team earned CSCAA Scholar All-America recognition, while 12 student-athletes received individual attention in announcements made by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America Wednesday. Teams that achieved a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the spring 2017 semester were awarded, while student-athletes who posted GPAs of 3.50 or higher and participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships garnered accolades.
"Coach Cyndi Gallagher has done an exceptional job building a top program in the pool and the classroom at UCLA," CSCAA Executive Director Joel Shinofield noted, "We are very fortunate to have schools like UCLA and people like Chancellor Block and Director of Athletics Guerrero who support these exceptional student-athletes."
The Bruins accumulated a team GPA of 3.38 during the spring and were one of eight Pac-12 teams honored. They posted a 3.29 GPA in fall 2016. A consistent inclusion among the CSCAA's spring and fall honorees, UCLA has only topped its latest GPA twice in the past five years (spring 2015 - 3.45, fall 2014 โ 3.39).
Individually, eight Bruins were named to the Scholar All-America team, while four more earned Honorable Mention selections. Freshman Isabella Goldsmith, sophomore Sandra Soe, juniors Katie Grover, Ciara Monahan and Maria Polyakova and seniors Annika Lenz, Linnea Mack and Madison White made up the former list, while freshman Lisa Kaunitz, sophomore Kat Friese, junior Marie-Pierre Delisle and senior Brigitte Winkler rounded out the list of top academic performers.
With their awards, Grover and Lenz are now three-time CSCAA honorees. Delisle, Monahan, Polyakova and Soe earned their second selections.
In the pool, Mack posted three new individual school-best times (50 Free, 100 Free and 100 Back) and was part of four new relay records (400 Free, 800 Free, 200 Medley and 400 Medley). White added an individual school record (200 Back) of her own and was part of two of the record-setting relay teams (400 Free and 800 Free). Grover was part of all four relay teams and Goldsmith two (200 Medley and 400 Medley) in her debut season.
The academic awards are the latest for a Bruin team that had a conference-best 23 swimmers and divers recognized by the Pac-12 in March. Emily Hammond and Lenz earned First-Team honors. Lenz also received the Athletic Director's Academic Excellence Award (Director's Honor Roll every quarter), the 2016-17 UCLA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-Districtโข Women's At-Large Team.
