UCLA Drops 3-0 Road Decision at No. 8 Clemson

September 19, 2017 | Men's Soccer

CLEMSON, S.C.Santiago Herrera recorded two shots on goal, while Brian Iloski and Milan Iloski each registered three shots as the UCLA men's soccer team fell to No. 8 Clemson on the road, 3-0, on Tuesday from Historic Riggs Field.

"Tonight was the perfect recipe for disaster," said head coach Jorge Salcedo. "We gave up an early penalty on the road to a good team. We were always chasing the game for the next eighty seven minutes. We had good spells in the game but could not convert our few chances we had and gave up untimely goals."

UCLA (2-3-0) outshot Clemson 16-12, including 9-6 in the second half, but the Tigers held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-3 lead in corner kicks.

Clemson (6-1-0) took an early 1-0 lead as the Tigers earned a foul in the box in the third minute and Diego Campos finished the ensuing penalty kick to the left-side of the goal for his third of the season.

The Bruins looked to even the match late in the first period when Anderson Asiedu found Blayne Martinez in the box in the 40th minute but after a scramble the Tigers were able to collect the ball and stop the threat.

The Tigers added to their lead in the 59th minute as they capitalized on a set piece. Campos served a free kick into the box that found Patrick Bunk-Andersen for a header into the lower-left side of the goal.

UCLA picked up the offensive momentum in the second period and had several chances to cut the deficit but were unable to find the back of the net. Martinez found space in the box for a shot after a nice pass from Asiedu in the 67th minute but it went wide, followed three minutes later by Brian Iloski taking a long range shot to the far post that was saved. In the 76th minute, Herrera broke free of the Clemson backline but his shot to the right post was also stopped by the keeper.

The Tigers made the score 3-0 in the 81st minute when Kimarni Smith finished a cross to the front of the box by Grayson Raynor.

Clemson recorded its fourth shutout of the season behind the effort of Ximo Miralles who finished with four saves. Kevin Silva tallied two saves in the match.

"Our three road losses were to high quality opponents," continued Salcedo. "I know we will be better from the two road trips and look forward to seeing how we react to this tough result."

The Bruins return to Drake Stadium for a three-game homestand starting with CSUN on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. PT before beginning Pac-12 play hosting California on Thursday, Sept. 28 followed by Stanford on Oct. 1. The matches against Cal and Stanford will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.
