LOS ANGELES -ย Sophomore Madeleine Gates had a match- and career-high 17 kills, committing no errors in 29 attempts for a .586 hitting percentage, while adding six blocks, as the 11th-ranked Bruins defeated #8 Oregon in four sets on Friday at the John Wooden Center. Set scores were 19-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21.

Senior Sarah Sponcil notched her team-best fifth double-double of the season with 47 assists and 19 digs, setting the Bruins (8-3, 1-1 Pac-12) to a .308 hitting percentage. Senior Reily Buechler also had a double-double, her fourth of the season and 20th of her career, with 12 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Mac May added 12 kills and four digs, while freshman Jenny Mosser had 11 kills, six digs and two aces. Junior Zana Muno recorded 13 digs, sophomore Savvy Simo had seven digs and junior Kyra Rogers tallied five kills and four digs.

Oregon (8-2, 1-1 Pac-12) led wire-to-wire in set one, scoring the first six points of the match and leading by as many as seven on a couple of occasions. At 20-13, the Bruins scored five in a row on kills by Gates and Mosser, two Duck attack errors and a Mosser/Gates block to get to within two, but Oregon scored five of the last six to win the opener 25-19. Mosser had four kills in the first, May added three and Sponcil posted seven digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .235 to .059.

It appeared as if set two was going to go the same way for the Bruins after falling behind 6-1. Oregon led by four as late as 10-6 before the Bruins scored five of six on a kill and ace by Mosser, a Sponcil ace and a Rogers kill and combo block with May to even things at 11. UCLA finally took its first lead of the match at 14-13 following a Sponcil dump and didn't trail for the rest of the second.

At 17-16, the Bruins scored eight of the last 10 points to win it 25-18. May had three kills during the final run, Mosser added two and Oregon committed three errors, including one on the Bruins' first set point. May was a perfect 4-for-4 in set two, Gates was 4-for-8 with no errors and Mosser added three kills, as the Bruins out-hit the Ducks .480 to .300.

UCLA never trailed in set three, scoring the first five points on two Buechler kills, a Rogers ace, a Gates solo block and a May kill. The Bruins' lead remained between three and eight for the rest of the set. At 13-10, five in a row on kills by May and Gates, a Gates solo block and combo stuff with Buechler and an Oregon attack error made it 18-10.

With the Bruins up 23-19, kills by Rogers and Buechler completed a 25-19 victory. Gates had five kills and no errors in seven attempts with four blocks, Buechler posted five kills and no errors in 12 swings and May and Mosser each added three kills. The Bruins out-hit the Ducks .368 to .147.

The fourth set was the best of the night with 13 ties and five lead changes. Oregon's largest lead of set four was one on a few occasions at 1-0, 8-7, 11-10 and 12-11. Back-to-back kills by Gates gave the Bruins a 13-12 edge and they would not lose the lead for the rest of the set. At 15-all, a 4-1 run made it a four-point lead, as Rogers had two kills and May and Buechler each posted one.

Oregon would make things interesting with the next three points to cut it to 23-21, but a Duck service error and a Gates kill wrapped up the 25-21 win. Gates was 6-for-10 in the fourth, Buechler added six kills and Rogers notched three. Muno and Sponcil each recorded six digs. The Bruins out-hit the Ducks .348 to .271.
