Bruins Drop Home Dual Meet to No. 3 Stanford

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA swimming and diving team fell to visiting No. 3 Stanford, 182-110, Friday at Spieker Aquatics Center. Kenisha Liu and Ciara Monahan each posted a win for the Bruin cause, while a number of other UCLA participants registered second-place finishes.
The Bruins and Cardinal began the dual meetโUCLA's first at home since Octoberโwith diving. UCLA senior Ciara Monahan continued her standout senior campaign with a meet-record score of 301.58 in the 1-Meter and held off Kassidy Cook of Stanford (285.23).
UCLA's "A" team of Emma Schanz, Sarah Kaunitz, Amy Okada and Carly Reid (1:42.78) challenged in the 200 Medley Relay, but the Cardinal "B" squad of Janet Hu, Ella Eastin, Ashley Volpenhein and Grace Zhao (1:41.24) prevailed in the first swimming event of the afternoon. The Bruins finished third. Cardinal swimmers Katie Drabot (9:45.48) and Lauren Pitzer (9:45.93) went 1-2 in a tight finish to the 1000 Free, while Sandra Soe was the top finishing Bruin with a fourth-place time. Margaux Verger Gourson finished fifth.
Kenisha Liu finished just 21 hundredths of a second back of Stanford's Brooke Ford in a close 200 Free race. Schanz followed her teammate's effort with a strong finish of her own, notching a second-place showing in the 100 Back, back of winner Simone Manuel of Stanford.
Bruins went 3-4-5 in the 100 Breast, as Sarah Kaunitz (1:04.35), Emma Cain (1:04.86) and Emily Honng (1:05.23) added points to the Bruin total. Katie Grover and Allison Goldblatt did, as well, securing fourth- and sixth-place finishes in the 200 Fly. Liu (23.21) and Amy Okada (23.41) picked up second- and third-place results, respectively, in the 50 Free.
During a short break from swimming, Monahan nearly won her second event of the day, placing second behind Cook in the 3-Meter event with a score of 302.33. Alice Yanovsky's 286.73 was good for fourth and two more Bruin points.
Liu gave the Bruins their lone swimming win of the day with the only sub-50-second time of the 100 Free race. The sophomore clocked in at 49.76 to hold off the Cardinal's Lauren Green (50.19).
Stanford's Katie Ledecky earned the 200 Back win, clocking in at 1:58.37. Bruin freshman Jennifer Lathrop posed a challenge to the Olympian, though, notching a time of 2:00.61 for a second-place finish.
Schanz and Eastin were neck and neck coming down the wire in the 200 Breast. The Cardinal swimmer topped the field at 2:13.53, while the Bruin junior finished second (2:14.04). Cain clocked in third (2:18.61).
Bruins went 2-3-4 in the 500 Free and 100 Fly after Stanford registered exhibition swims. They also picked up points in the 200 IM. The meet wrapped with the 200 Free Relay, where the UCLA "A" team was its top-performing entry. Bruins Grover, Liu, Okada and Sarah Kaunitz teamed for a time of 1:33.30, behind only the Stanford "A" quartet of Lindsey Engel, Hu, Manuel and Alex Meyers (1:31.20).
The Bruins will return to the pool Saturday, when No. 5 California pays a visit to Spieker Aquatics Center. Diving will begin at 11:15 a.m., while swimming will commence at 12:00 p.m.
