SAN FRANCISCO - Sophomore Patty Tavatanakit was named Pac-12 Conference Golfer of the Month on Monday after producing a win and a runner-up finish in two September tournaments.
Tavatanakit opened the season with a victory at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M thanks to an unbelievable final round. She blistered the Royal Golf Club on Sept. 19, firing a 9-under 63 to set a new course record and tie UCLA's single-round mark. Tavatanakit, who started her final round tied for ninth and seven shots back of the lead, was even par through her first eight holes after making bogey on the fourth and birdie on the seventh. Then the sophomore kicked it into high gear, making seven consecutive birdies (No. 9-15) to get into contention. Following a couple of pars on No. 16 and 17, she trailed USC's Malia Nam by one shot, needing a birdie on the par-5 18th to tie or an eagle to win. She made a three on the 18th on Tuesday (Sept. 18) and would do it again on Wednesday, sinking a 12-foot putt to record the fifth victory of her career, finishing at 13-under 203. Tavatanakit helped the Bruins finish in second place at 26-under 838, which established a new school record for a 54-hole event.
That 54-hole record didn't last long, as the Bruins the following week shot a 32-under 832 at the Golfweek Conference Challenge (Sept. 24-26), winning by 33 strokes. Tavatanakit finished runner-up to teammate Mariel Galdiano, and almost pulled off the victory following another final-round charge. She shot a 5-under 67 to place two shots back at 11-under 205. Tavatanakit made three birdies, a bogey and a double on her front nine before catching fire on the back, going 6-under in a five-hole stretch. The sophomore made four birdies in a row from holes No. 11 through 14 before making an eagle-3 on the par-5 15th to get to within a shot of Galdiano. Tavatanakit made one bogey coming in to finish two back.
Monday's award marks the second Pac-12 Golfer of the Month honor for Tavatanakit, who also earned the nod in April 2018.
Next up for the Bruins is the Stanford Intercollegiate, which will take place Oct. 19-21 at the Stanford Golf Course.
