10-Man Bruins Downed at Washington, 2-0
October 25, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 23 UCLA men's soccer team snapped a four-game winning streak on Thursday night, falling by a score of 2-0 to Washington at Husky Soccer Field.
The Bruins (9-5, 4-2) were forced to play most of the second half a man down after senior midfielder Joab Santoyo was issued a straight red card in the 52nd minute.
UCLA held the Huskies (8-8, 4-4) off the board for over 20 minutes after going to 10 men, but Washington broke through in the 74th, earning a PK after a Washington player was dragged down going for a corner kick. Scott Menzies converted on the spot kick to net what turned out to be the game-winner.
Washington doubled its lead at the 76:20 mark. Menzies received a low pass off a corner kick at the right edge of the box, then slung the ball towards net where it was re-directed in by Freddy Kleeman.
UCLA freshman keeper Justin Garces made a number of high-quality saves to keep the Bruins in the game. His top efforts included a stop of a Charlie Ostrem drive in the 20th minute, followed by a diving denial of a Kyle Coffee shot in the 73rd. He ended the night making five saves.
Scoring chances weren't abundant for the Bruins, but junior forward Mohammed Kamara came close to finding the back of the net on a pair of occasions.
In the 41st minute, he faked a shot to his right then got the ball on his left foot for a tight-angle shot, but he overcut his off-foot shot and hit it wide of the near post. In the 48th, he got himself into a good position inside the box with the ball at his feet, but by the time he settled it for a shot, a swarm of defenders surrounded him and forced him to shoot high.
The Bruins are back in action on Sunday afternoon, battling Oregon State in a Pac-12 Network-televised game. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
