LAHAINA, Hawaii - Senior Patrick Murphy shot an opening-round, 8-under 63 on Friday and has a share of the lead following 18 holes at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational at the Ka'anapali Golf Club's Royal Ka'anapali Course.
Starting on the 16th hole, Murphy was 7-under through his first 12 holes. He made a birdie on No. 17 before recording an eagle on the par-5 first hole. Murphy added a birdie on the second, and after four pars in a row, tallied a birdie on No. 7. Following a par on the eighth, Murphy book-ended his front side with another eagle on the par-5 ninth. His lone bogey came on the 10th, as he made up for it with birdies on No. 11 and No. 15, his last hole, to post a 63.
With ideal scoring conditions, the Bruins are in seventh place as a team following a 12-under 272. UCLA is just one shot back of fourth place and 10 off the lead held by Clemson.
Freshman Bryan Wiyang Teoh is tied for 20th and had an incredible four-hole stretch on his front nine. Starting on the 15th, he was 3-over after three bogeys before going 5-under on holes No. 3 through 6. Teoh made birdies on the third, fourth and fifth, while posting an eagle on the par-5 sixth. He added birdies on No. 9 and 11 and just one more bogey to notch a 3-under 68.
Sophomore Devon Bling was also under par, shooting a 1-under 70, putting him in a tie for 47th. He made four birdies on No. 1, 4, 7 and 13 to go with three bogeys. Junior Hidetoshi Yoshihara and sophomore Eddy Lai are tied for 59th following even-par 71s. Yoshihara had a pair of birdies on No. 18 and 3 and two bogeys, while Lai made three birdies (No. 18, 3 and 9) and three bogeys.
It will be another shotgun start on Saturday, beginning at 11:30 a.m. PT/8:30 a.m. HT, with Murphy opening on No. 4, Bling and Teoh on No. 5, Lai on No. 6 and Yoshihara on the seventh.
