LOS ANGELES - Senior Zana Munoย finished her outstanding career with her second-best digs total as a Bruin, while also surpassing the 1,600 mark for her career, as UCLA battled back from an 0-2 deficit, but fell in five to No. 15 USC on Friday at Pauleyย Pavilion presented by Wescom. Set scores were 23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16, 9-15.
The Bruins conclude their season with a 13-14 overall record and an 8-12 mark in Pac-12 play, while the Trojans improve to 21-10 and 13-7 in league.
Muno posted 35 digs, the second time she has reached the 30-dig mark this month (UCLA single-match high 38 against Washington State on Nov. 8). Sophomore Mac May recorded 16 kills, junior Madeleine Gates had 13 kills and four blocks and redshirt freshman Emily Ryan notched 10 kills, six blocks, four aces and four digs. Junior Kylie Miller added 39 assists, six digs and four blocks, sophomore Jenny Mosser had 14 digs, six kills and five blocks, freshman Kelsey Campeau tallied 10 digs, junior Savvy Simoย had nine digs and senior Kyra Rogers registered five digs and three blocks. The Bruins hit .208 for the match.
The Bruins jumped out to a 6-3 lead in set one, as Ryan had two aces and a kill, with Mosser adding a kill and an ace. Trailing 14-13, UCLA scored six in a row and eight of nine to take a set-best lead of six at 21-15. The first half a dozen points came on a May kill, a USC attack error, a Muno ace, a Ryan kill and two more May kills. After a sideout, a USC service error and a Ryan kill put the Bruins up by six. The Trojans responded with 10 of the final 12 points to win the opening set by a score of 25-23. Ryan had five kills to lead the Bruins, May added three and Muno posted seven digs, as the Bruins were out-hit, .389 to .114.
Set two featured 13 ties and seven lead changes. Trailing 13-11, the Bruins scored eight of 10 to go ahead 19-15. May had two kills during the run, Gates added one, Ryan and Miller teamed up for a block and USC made four errors. The Trojans rallied again though, scoring the next five and eight of nine to go up 23-20, eventually winning the second by a score of 25-22. Muno tallied 11 digs and Gates had four kills. The Bruins were out-hit, .176 to .167.
Set three was just as close as the previous one, with 13 ties and five lead changes. Neither team led by more than three. Down 20-18, four in a row for the Bruins on a USC service error, back-to-back Ryan aces and a Mosser/Gates block put UCLA up by a pair. The Trojans got two of the next three, but another USC service error gave the Bruins a pair of set points, with a May solo block ending a 25-22 victory. May had five kills in the third and Gates was 3-for-5 with no errors, as the Bruins out-hit the Trojans, .189 to .064. Muno added eight digs, Campeau had six and Mosser posted five digs. The Bruins had five blocks as a team, with Gates chiming in on three of them.
The Bruins ran away in the fourth set to force a fifth. Down 7-6, a Ryan kill and block with Rogers, a Mosser kill and a Trojan attack error gave the Bruins a 10-7 lead, an edge the home team held for the rest of the set. At 11-9, another 4-0 run on a Mosser/Gates block, a USC error, a Gates kill and a Miller solo stuff put the Bruins up 15-9. Four would be the smallest lead for the Bruins for the rest of the set. At 19-15, five in a row on a May kill, a Ryan/Mosser block, a USC attack error, a Ryan kill and a Ryan/Rogers block gave UCLA nine set points. On the second attempt, a Mosser solo finished up a 25-16 win. May was 4-for-10 with no errors in the fourth, Mosser added four digs and the Bruins had six more blocks as a team, with Mosser and Ryan each providing three. The Bruins out-hit the Trojans, .323 to .025.
After surrendering the first two points of the fifth set, back-to-back Gates kills and one by Mosser gave the Bruins a lead. It would be the last advantage for UCLA. The Trojans netted seven of the next nine and never looked back, winning the fifth by a score of 15-9. Gates had four kills in the fifth, while Muno added six. The Bruins were out-hit, .320 to .300.
