Comeback Effort at LMU Falls Short for No. 23 UCLA
November 06, 2018 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – The No. 23 UCLA women's basketball team nearly overcame a 13-point, fourth quarter deficit, but the Bruins shot just 35.4 percent en route to suffering a 69-63 setback in their season opener on Tuesday night at Gersten Pavilion.
Senior guard Japreece Dean scored a team-high 16 points, while senior Kennedy Burke collected her third career double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds to go along with three blocks on the way to becoming the 34th Bruin in UCLA women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points.
Redshirt freshman Lindsey Corsaro added 13 points, six rebounds and four dimes, while freshman guard Ahlana Smith recorded 13 points in her Bruin debut.
The Storyline
The opening 10 minutes of play was a rock fight, with both teams shooting a combined 13-for-45 (28.9 percent) from the field. Corsaro netted five first-quarter points to lead the Bruins, while Burke muscled her way inside for four points and five boards in the early going.
Sophomore Michaela Onyenwere cleaned up the glass to give UCLA its final lead (17-15) of the affair with 8:34 remaining in the second quarter, but LMU fired back with a 10-2 run to go up eight. The Bruins scored six unanswered to trim the deficit to two (25-23), and the Lions mustered one more 6-0 spurt before Smith tallied a 5-0 run of her own to pull UCLA within three (31-28) at the break.
UCLA's shooting woes continued into the second half, starting 3-for-13 in the third stanza to fall behind by 11 (45-34), and the Bruins entered the final quarter with the same margin, down 52-41.
Dean got the steal on one end and found Corsaro on the right wing for a three to cut the deficit to eight (56-48) at the eight-minute mark, but the Lions continued to have an answer, getting consecutive layups to remain in front.
Back-to-back three's by Dean and Burke put the momentum in the hands of the Bruins, and Dean later scored a two in the lane to make it a two-point (64-62) game with less than two minutes remaining.
Trailing 65-62, UCLA had a chance to tie down the stretch, but the Bruins came up empty, ultimately succumbing to a 69-63 setback.
The Lions were led by Gabby Green's 25 points and seven rebounds.
