CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia extended her consecutive scoreless innings streak to 23 1/3 with a complete-game, two-hit shutout in Friday's first win, a 5-0 triumph over #23 Nebraska, while redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan homered in both ends of the doubleheader, including a go-ahead, two-run shot in the fifth, to send the third-ranked Bruins to a 4-3 victory over Liberty at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic II.
Garcia (4-0) fanned 11, striking out the side in the third, a pair each in the first, second and fourth and one apiece in the fifth and sixth. She allowed just two hits and two walks in her seven innings, retiring the side in order in the first and fourth. Garcia added two hits at the plate, while Jordan recorded two hits and two RBI, as the Bruins had seven hits from five different players.
The Bruins (11-0) scored three runs with two outs in the third. With senior Kylee Perez aboard after reaching on a fielder's choice, Jordan crushed her second homer of the season to center to put UCLA up by a pair. Junior Brianna Tautalafua followed with a double to right and scored on a Garcia single to center to make it 3-0.
UCLA extended its lead over Nebraska (9-4) by two in the sixth. Garcia and sophomore Bubba Nickles opened the inning with singles, with junior Zoe Shaw coming in to run for Garcia. A walk to sophomore Jacqui Prober loaded the bases, and one out later, freshman Malia Quarles added a walk to score Shaw to make it 4-0. Freshman Briana Perez followed with a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Nickles to increase the lead to 5-0.
In game two against Liberty (10-3), Jordan added two more hits and two more RBI, while Kylee Perez produced a pair of hits, as the Bruins (12-0) had six hits from four different players. Senior Selina Ta'amilo struck out five in four innings of scoreless relief to post her first win of the season, allowing just two baserunners on a pair of singles. Senior Johanna Grauer started and fanned three in three innings, giving up three runs (two earned), four hits and two walks.
The Flames scored in the top of the first on an RBI single by Tori Zavodny, but the Bruins responded with two in their first at-bat. Kylee Perez doubled to left-center with one out, Jordan drew a walk and both moved up on a double steal. Tautalafua followed with a single to score Perez to tie things at one, with a Liberty error allowing Jordan to score the go-ahead run.
Liberty re-took the lead with single runs in the second and third, producing an RBI groundout by Autumn Bishop to even things at two and an RBI double by Sarah Robertson to go up by one.
The Bruins took the advantage for good in the fifth with a two-out rally, as Kylee Perez tripled to right and came home on a long homer to right by Jordan, her third of the season, to put UCLA up 4-3.
UCLA continues play in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic II at 5 p.m. on Saturday when it takes on #7 LSU. Free live stats and live video for a fee will be available at UCLABruins.com.
