CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The third-ranked Bruins improved to 13-0 and handed #7 LSU its first loss of the season on Saturday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic II, recording a 9-1, five-inning victory.
Eight of the nine Bruin starters posted a hit, as UCLA had 13 as a team. Junior Brianna Tautalafua had two hits and three RBI, while senior Kylee Perez, junior Paige Halstead and freshman Briana Perez notched two hits apiece.
Redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia struck out 12 in five innings to move to 5-0 on the season. She limited LSU (14-1) to two hits and one walk. Garcia struck out the side in the first, third and fifth, two in the second and one in the fourth, recording 1-2-3 innings in the second, third and fifth.
The Bruins scored a pair of runs on one swing of the bat in the bottom of the first, as Tautalafua recorded her fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot to left with redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan aboard.
In the third, Briana Perez led off with a double to right, moved to third when Kylee Perez reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single up the middle by Jordan to make it 3-0. Following a Kylee stolen base and a Tautalafua walk to load the bases, Garcia singled up the middle to plate Perez and Jordan to up the lead to 5-0.
Garcia's scoreless innings streak would be snapped at 27 following an obstruction call in the top of the fourth, as Amber Serrett scored from third in the middle of a rundown play to make it 5-1.
The Bruins got the run back in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Kylee Perez doubled to right-center, moved to third on a Jordan grounder and scored on a single to right by Tautalafua to put UCLA up 6-1.
UCLA tallied its sixth mercy-rule win of the season in the fifth with three runs. Sophomore Bubba Nickles singled to left and moved to third on a Halstead single to center, with junior Imani Johnson coming in to run for Halstead. After Johnson stole second and junior Zoe Shaw walked to load the bases, freshman Julie Rodriguez notched the first hit and RBI of her collegiate career on a single to right to plate Nickles and Johnson to make it 8-1. With Rodriguez moving to second on the throw home, Briana Perez singled to left-center to score Shaw with the mercy-rule run.
