WESTLAKE VILLAGE AND SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The 22nd-ranked Bruins send five golfers to the team-scoring Southwestern Invitational at the North Ranch Country Club and four to the individual-event TMU Spring Invite at the Sand Canyon Country Club. Both tournaments will be three-round, two-day events, with 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.
At the Southwestern Invitational, senior Tyler Collier, junior Cole Madey, sophomore Hidetoshi Yoshihara and freshmen Devon Bling and Eddy Lai will be part of the team event at the par-72, 6,994-yard layout. Monday will feature a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start to the 36 holes, beginning on #14-#18. Live scoring will be available here.
Joining the Bruins and host #41 Pepperdine in the 15-team field are #39 San Diego State, #48 Tennessee, Augusta, Denver, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon State, San Jose State, SMU, UC Davis and Washington State.
The Bruins have placed in the Top 4 in all six tournaments this season, including a T-2 finish (+8, 872) at The Farms Invitational (Feb. 12-13) and a fourth-place showing (-16, 848) at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate (Feb. 16-18) to kick off the spring portion of their schedule. UCLA has been under par as a team in four tournaments, as well as 11 of 17 rounds. The Bruins' best finish of 2017-2018 was a second-place showing (+13, 877) at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills (Oct. 1-3), while their best score to par came at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational (Oct. 29-31), where they were fourth with a three-round score of 37-under 827. UCLA tied for third (-3, 565) at the Inverness Intercollegiate (Sept. 18-19) and tied for fourth (-18, 846) at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate (Oct. 20-22).
Madey has finished inside the Top 12 in four events in a row, shooting under par in all three rounds at the Desert Intercollegiate. He tied for seventh at 8-under 208, his third Top 10 finish of the season to go with a solo seventh at the Makai Invite (-14, 202) and a T-9 showing at Inverness (-3, 139). Madey holds a scoring average of 71.1, having shot red figures in 10 of his 17 rounds and in the 60s on seven occasions. Collier posted a season-best, ninth-place finish (-7, 209) at the Desert Intercollegiate thanks to a closing 66 (-6). It was his seventh under-par round of the season and third in the 60s. Yoshihara is coming off his best round of the season to end the Desert Intercollegiate, posting a 7-under 65, one of his nine under-par rounds of 2017-2018 and five in the 60s. He has a scoring average of 71.5 and three Top 10s at The Farms (T-2, -3, 213), the Marquette Intercollegiate (T-3, -2, 214) and the Inverness (T-6, -4, 138). Lai has three Top 20s, eight under-par rounds and five rounds in the 60s. He tied for 12th at the Georgia Collegiate (-5, 211) and tied for 16th at Marquette (+5, 221). Bling ended the fall with a T-16 at the Makai Invite (-8, 208) and began the spring with a T-17 at The Farms (+4, 220). He has five under-par rounds, four of them in the 60s.
In addition, four individuals, juniors Phil Delisi, Jack Ireland and Patrick Murphy and sophomore Scott Mitchell, will be playing at the TMU Spring Invite at Sand Canyon CC. Delisi will be playing in his third event, tying for 34th (+4, 220) at the Bill Cullum Invitational (Oct. 16-17) and placing 38th at The Farms (+13, 229). Ireland has appeared in three events, going T-25 at The Farms (+7, 223), T-34 at the Cullum (+4, 220) and a T-53 at the Desert Intercollegiate (+5, 221). Murphy has played in five events so far this season, recording a T-17 at the Cullum (E, 216) and a pair of under-par rounds, including a 2-under 70 to open the Desert Intercollegiate. Mitchell will be playing in his first event this season. No live scoring will be available for the TMU Spring Invite.
