WESTLAKE VILLAGE AND SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The 22nd-ranked Bruins hold a four-shot lead at the Southwestern Invitational, as darkness halted play toward the latter stages of the second round at the North Ranch Country Club. UCLA shot a 3-under 285 in its first round on Monday following a two-hour frost delay to start the morning to take a five-shot lead over Tennessee. With around six-to-eight holes remaining in their second round, the Bruins are at +3, four ahead of Pepperdine.
Round two will resume at 8 a.m. on Tuesday and golfers will immediately go into the third round in the same groups. Live scoring will be available here.
All five Bruins were in the Top 15 after 18 holes, with junior Cole Madey leading the way following a 2-under 70 to put him in solo second. Starting on the 14th, Madey made birdies on #15, #4 and #7 before his first bogey on the eighth. He added a birdie on #10 and a bogey on #11 for his 70. Madey is currently tied for sixth (E) with seven holes remaining in round two.
Sophomore Hidetoshi Yoshihara was tied for third after an opening-round 71 (-1). He posted five birdies on #3, #4, #6, #10 and #11 to go with four bogeys. Yoshihara is tied for 11th (+2) with six holes left in his second round.
Freshman Eddy Lai also shot an opening-round 71 (-1), making four birdies on #1, #5, #6 and #12, adding three bogeys. He is still at 1-under and tied for second with seven holes left in his second round.
Senior Tyler Collier notched a 1-over 73 (T-12) in his first 18 holes, making three straight birdies on holes #5-#7 to go with two bogeys and a double. He is at +3 (T-13) with eight holes remaining his second 18.
Freshman Devon Bling posted a 2-over 74 (T-15) in his opening round on Monday, making five birdies on #4, #5, #10, #11 and #15, two doubles and one triple. He sits in a tie for 21st (+4) with eight holes left in his second round.
Four more Bruins are playing as individuals at the TMU Spring Invite at the Sand Canyon Country Club. Just like at North Ranch, darkness suspended play before the second round could be completed, with a one-hour frost delay to start the first round. However, all four UCLA golfers finished their second rounds. Junior Phil Delisi is tied for second (-2, 142) following rounds of 1-over 73 and 3-under 69. Hole-by-hole scores were unavailable for this tournament. Junior Jack Ireland is tied for fifth at 1-over 145, posting an opening-round 72 (E) and a second-round 73 (+1). Junior Patrick Murphy and sophomore Scott Mitchell are each tied for 28th (+8, 152). Murphy shot a pair of 4-over 76s, while Mitchell went 78 (+6)-74 (+2).
