LOS ANGELES - In her first collegiate action, freshman Briana Perez went 5-for-7 with six runs batted in, four runs scored and a home run, as the fourth-ranked Bruins won both of their opening-day games at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament on Friday, defeating Maryland 5-1 and Middle Tennessee 11-0 in five innings.

In game one versus the Terrapins, the Bruins made the most of their four hits, scoring five times. All five runs came in the first three innings, as Perez posted two hits and three RBI. In the circle, senior Johanna Grauer struck out four in six-plus innings, giving up a run, five hits and five walks. She struck out one in each of her first three innings and another in the sixth. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia finished up the game in the seventh, striking out three and allowing a walk and a hit batter.

Perez reached on an infield single to open her collegiate career in the bottom of the first, stole second, moved to third on a Maryland fielding error and scored on an RBI grounder off the bat of redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan to make it 1-0.ย

In the second, Perez made it 4-0 on one swing of the bat. With junior Paige Halstead at third following a leadoff walk and Garcia at second after reaching on an error, Perez belted the first home run of her career to right-center to increase the Bruins' lead to 4-0.

UCLA added another run in the third. Jordan led off with a walk, and was pinch-run for by junior Jenna Crawford, who moved to second on a walk to junior Brianna Tautalafua, to third on a wild pitch and to home on a single to left off the bat of junior Zoe Shaw.

Maryland would get on the board in the fourth on an RBI double by Bailey Boyd, and would eventually have the tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh, but Garcia shut the door to preserve the win for Grauer.

In the nightcap versus the Blue Raiders, six Bruins combined for 11 hits, with Perez going 3-for-3 with three RBI, Jordan and sophomore Bubba Nickles both going 2-for-3 with two RBI, junior Taylor Pack adding two hits and freshman Kinsley Washington recording a pair of runs batted in. Freshman Holly Azevedo tossed five shutout innings for her first collegiate victory, striking out five and giving up just two hits and a walk. She retired seven in a row at one point, posting 1-2-3 frames in the second and third and a pair of strikeouts in the third.

UCLA scored in all four of its plate appearances. In the first, Perez reached on a bunt single, advanced to second on a ground out by her sister and senior Kylee Perez and scored on a double to left by Jordan to make it 1-0. One out later, Jordan advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on a triple to right from Nickles.

The Bruins added two more in the second. With one out, freshman Julie Rodriguez walked and Washington was hit by a pitch. A single up the middle from Briana Perez brought in Rodriguez to make it 3-0. After a wild pitch gave UCLA two runners in scoring position, Kylee Perez lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Washington with the Bruins' fourth run.

UCLA broke it open with six in the third, all coming with two outs. Garcia drew a walk, and was pinch-run for by sophomore Jacqui Prober, who moved to second after a Pack single. A wild pitch moved both Prober and Pack up, a free pass to Rodriguez loaded the bases and a double to left-center by Washington scored Prober and Pack to increase the margin to 6-0. Briana Perez followed with a triple off the top of the wall in center to plate Rodriguez and Washington to make it 8-0. Kylee Perez then knocked in her sister with a single to right to up the edge to 9-0, with Kylee taking second on an error. With junior Imani Johnson running for Kylee Perez, Jordan singled to left-center to get the Bruins to double digits.

The Bruins brought in one more in the fourth, as Nickles belted a leadoff homer to left-center to make it 11-0.

UCLA plays just once on Saturday against Cal Poly at 12 p.m. There will be no video or audio, but live stats will be available at UCLABruins.com.
