LOS ANGELES - Freshman Briana Perez continued her hitting barrage to start her collegiate career and freshman Holly Azevedo and senior Johanna Grauer combined on a two-hit shutout in the circle, as the fourth-ranked Bruins defeated Cal Poly 13-0 in five innings on Saturday at the Stacy Winsbergย Memorial Tournament.
The Bruins (3-0) recorded 15 hits from 11 different players, with Perez going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI, redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan added two hits and junior Paige Halstead drove in three.
Azevedoย picked up her second victory of the season, striking out three in three innings and giving up a hit and one walk.ย She retired the side in order in the second and struck out two in the third. Grauerย struck out two, one in each of her two innings, allowing a hit and a walk.
The Bruins put up an eight spot in the first inning. Perez led off with a double to left-center, and one out later, moved to third on a single by Jordan, with a hit by pitch of sophomore Bubba Nickles loading the bases. Back-to-back walks to junior Brianna Tautalafuaย and Halstead made it 2-0. Garcia followed with a single to center to bring in Nickles with UCLA's third run. A single to right by junior Zoe Shaw made it 4-0, and one out later, Perez cleared the bases with a double down the right-field line to up the advantage to 7-0. After senior Kylee Perez was hit by a pitch, Jordan posted her second single of the inning to score Briana Perez to make it 8-0.
In the second, Tautalafua led off with a single to left, and was pinch-run for by junior Imani Johnson, who moved to second on a wild pitch and scored one out later on a double by Garcia to bring the lead to 9-0.
UCLA added four more in the third. The Perez sisters started the inning with back-to-back singles, and one out later, a Nickles single up the middle brought in Briana to make it 10-0. One out later, Kylee Perez and junior Stevie Wisz, who was running for Nickles, moved up a base on a wild pitch and Halstead followed with a single up the middle to plate both to give the Bruins a 12-0 advantage. Redshirt senior Jelly Felix came in to run for Halstead, moving to second after a Garcia walk, to third following a hit by pitch of Shaw and to the plate after an RBI single by freshman Malia Quarles to make it 13-0.
The Bruins close out the weekend with a doubleheader on Sunday, facing Cal Poly at 2 p.m. and UC Riverside at 4:30 p.m. Live audio and live stats will be available at UCLABruins.com.
