LOS ANGELES - The Bruins finished up the opening weekend with two more wins at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, defeating Cal Poly 7-2 in Sunday's first game before knocking off UC Riverside 13-2 in five innings in the nightcap.
ย
In game one against Cal Poly (3-2), redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, striking out eight in six innings and giving up two runs and three hits. She retired 13 in a row at one point with 1-2-3 frames in the second, third, fourth and fifth. Garcia fanned two in the first and third and one each in the other four innings to earn her first win of the season. Senior Johanna Grauer retired all three batters she faced in the seventh.
ย
At the plate, eight Bruins (4-0) combined for 13 hits, as junior Taylor Pack went 3-for-3 and Garcia, junior Brianna Tautalafua and freshman Briana Perez each had two-hit contests.
ย
After a scoreless inning and a half, the Bruins scored four times in the second. Tautalafua led off the frame with a homer to right-center, her first of the season. Garcia and Pack followed with singles, moved up a base on a grounder by freshman Julie Rodriguez and scored on a single up the middle by freshman Kinsley Washington to make it 3-0. With Washington moving to second on the throw home, Perez singled to left-center to get her to third and a sacrifice fly to center by senior Kylee Perez made it 4-0.
ย
In the third, a two-out rally on a Garcia single to left and a Pack double to right-center increased the margin to 5-0. UCLA added two more in the fourth. Washington led off with a walk and stole second and Briana Perez drew a free pass. After a Kylee Perez grounder moved both runners up, redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan singled to left to bring in Washington to make it 6-0, with an error in left by the Mustangs allowing Briana to score the Bruins' seventh run.
ย
Cal Poly got on the board in the sixth with two runs on a double by Hailey Martin, but the Bruins held on for the five-run victory.
ย
In game two versus UC Riverside (2-3), Tautalafua opened and closed the scoring, hitting a three-run homer in the first and a grand slam in the fifth to end the game. She went 4-for-4 with two homers, tying career highs in both categories, and setting a new personal best with seven RBI. The Bruins (5-0) had 12 hits from nine different players.
ย
In the circle, freshman Holly Azevedo improved to 3-0 on the season, striking out three in five innings and allowing two runs (one earned), six hits and two walks. She had a strikeout in each of her first three frames and a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth.
ย
In the first, Kylee Perez doubled down the left-field line, Jordan singled up the middle and both came home on Tautalafua's second homer of the afternoon to left. The Bruins tacked on three more in the second. With one out, Washington singled up the middle, stole second, moved to third on a throwing error by the Highlanders and scored on a homer to center by Briana Perez, her second of the season, to make it 5-0. Walks to Kylee Perez and Jordan, and a single by Tautalafua, loaded the bases for Garcia, who grounded out to bring in Perez with the Bruins' sixth run.
ย
UC Riverside got on the board with single runs in the third (RBI single by Brittney Garcia) and fourth (RBI single by Jenna Curtan). UCLA would get one of the runs back in the fourth. With one out, Jordan walked, Tautalafua singled up the middle, Jordan stole third and then came home on a Garcia sacrifice fly to center to make it 7-2.
ย
The Bruins invoked the mercy rule with a six-run fifth. Sophomore Bubba Nickles led off with a double, and was pinch-run for by junior Stevie Wisz, who scored on a triple to right by junior Zoe Shaw. Freshman Malia Quarles followed with a single up the middle to bring in Shaw to make it 9-2. One out later, back-to-back walks to Kylee Perez and Jordan brought up Tautalafua, who launched a game-ending grand slam to center to clinch a 13-2 victory.
ย
UCLA plays one more game at home before a long road trip, hosting Fordham on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Easton Stadium. Live audio and stats will be available at UCLABruins.com.
